Manneville-ès-Plains is located on the Pays de Caux plateau, near the English Channel. The parish church, rural landscape features and designated activities offer different ways to plan a stay—from church and local history to horse-riding activities and a named walking route.
The parish church and its building history
The parish church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption is located in Manneville-ès-Plains and has belonged to Fécamp Abbey since 990. Following the fire of 1840, the choir, sacristy and side chapels were restored from 1841 to 1842; the nave, west portal and bell tower followed in 1849. The dates therefore distinguish two phases of the restoration. The painting “Saint Sébastien” is in the north side chapel.
Rural landscape features
Typical Clos cauchois and banks planted with oak and beech trees shape the landscape; the banks provide shelter from the wind. The village lies among mature beech trees around a pond. When comparing the landscape features, it is worth distinguishing between the windbreak banks and the tree-lined village setting around the pond: the description covers both the wider landscape and specific features of the village.
Manor house, rectory and local history
A manor house, built in the Gothic style around 1460, adjoins the church. It was inhabited by the abbesses of Montivilliers. The sculptures and bas-reliefs on the old rectory are worth a closer look; the former rectory became the town hall in January 2023. Another local curiosity is the unusual façade of a house called “A l'oriflamme de Saint Denis”.
The history of the local economy is also part of the village’s past. It combined various forms of weaving wool, flax and cotton with agriculture. Those who want to learn about Manneville-ès-Plains through more than its buildings can find an additional, economic-historical perspective here.
Horse-riding activities and walking route
The Écuries de Manneville offer individual and group riding lessons for adults and children aged two and over. The Écuries’ Poney Club offers year-round activities and riding lessons. If you plan to take part in one of these activities, check current availability before your trip.
The walking route “Circuit N°6 - Aux sources de la Veules” is 17.52 km long and designated for hiking and Vélo/VTC. It passes through Manneville-ès-Plains and then continues along the GR 21 to Veules-les-Roses. Its length, designated activities and route answer different planning questions: How long is the route, which activities is it designated for, and where does it lead?
This brings two different types of activity into focus: lessons and year-round activities at the Écuries, as well as a route with a stated length and designated activities. Which one suits your stay depends on whether you want to plan horse-riding activities or follow the route on foot or by Vélo/VTC.
