Eu offers a broad range of cultural and historical themes, from castle and collection history to sacred architecture and archaeology; nature and glassmaking broaden the picture. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the different kinds of visits: the Château d’Eu focuses on museum collections, Briga takes you to the traces of an ancient town, and the Forêt indivise d’Eu offers a nature experience. This lets you choose your own focus instead of treating the sights as interchangeable stops.

Castle history and collections

The Château d’Eu was built in the 16th century by Henri de Lorraine, the third Duke of Guise. Since 1973, it has housed the Musée Louis-Philippe. The museum is considered France’s last royal residence. Its collections include furniture, porcelain, gold and silverware, and paintings. They also include historical keepsakes connected with the Princes of Orléans and the first Entente Cordiale. The Château therefore brings both the building’s history and a collection with specific historical connections into focus.

The Collégiale Notre-Dame et Saint-Laurent is also a destination for culture lovers: it is considered an important example of Norman sacred architecture and is part of the Route des Abbayes de Normandie. The Chapelle du collège des jésuites offers a different perspective. Built in the early 17th century, it is now a historic monument with an extensive programme of cultural events. The Collégiale thus represents sacred architecture and a cultural route that extends beyond the local area, while the Jesuit chapel is a historic building with a cultural programme.

Archaeology and glass culture

On a visit or during an introductory archaeology course, you can discover the remains of Briga, a small town dating from the 1st to the 3rd century AD. The lives of its inhabitants are also part of the subject. Dates and availability may vary. This experience differs from the museum collection at the Château: here, the focus is on the traces of an ancient town and its inhabitants, while the Château features furniture, crafts and historical keepsakes.

The Musée des Traditions Verrières d’Eu traces the history of glass from its origins to the present day. One focus is the regional production of glass flasks. This adds a dedicated perspective on glass and its manufacture to the historical collections and archaeological themes. Visitors who organise cultural outings by theme can thus distinguish between royal history, antiquity, sacred architecture and regional glassmaking traditions.

Forest, viewpoints and planning your visit

The Forêt indivise d’Eu comprises four remarkable natural areas: la basse forêt d’Eu, les coteaux calcaires de la haute forêt d’Eu, les tourbières du Siège Madame and les landes de Beaumont. Protected species are found in the forest, including ferns and orchids, as well as amphibians such as frogs and newts. This classification describes different areas; the species mentioned add a perspective on protected plant and animal life.

The grounds of the Château d’Eu cover just under four hectares, adding a green space of their own to the cultural attractions. The site of the Chapelle Saint-Laurent offers another view of the landscape: from there, a 360-degree panorama takes in the mouth of the Bresle and the three sister towns of Eu, Le Tréport and Mers-les-Bains. The site is freely accessible all year round. In the Forêt d’Eu, the Sainte-Catherine viewpoint is also a good spot for a picnic.

A special annual event is the nine-day Saint-Laurent novena, held every year around 10 May. It includes a pilgrimage from the Collégiale to the Chapelle Saint-Laurent. This provides a specific seasonal highlight, while the site of the Chapelle is freely accessible all year round. If you are planning a visit around the novena, you can plan for the date and bear in mind that dates and availability for Briga may vary.
