In the Marais Poitevin, you can bring nature experiences together with the history of water management. Ports, washhouses, wells, quays, footbridges, locks, pontoons and hydraulic structures are all part of the water heritage. You can explore these landmarks on foot, by bicycle, on horseback, by boat or by canoe. Marked, navigable waterways also offer opportunities for nature excursions by boat. The Vendée itself encompasses landscapes ranging from plains and bocage to coastline, marshes, dunes and forests. Nature watching, cycling routes and historic sites offer different ways to discover this varied region.
Water Landscapes and Birdwatching
Bird enthusiasts will find a 56-hectare protected area at the Cité des Oiseaux, with an observatory, a viewing point and walking trails. From there, you can watch waterbirds and migrating songbirds. The Réserve des Huttes offers a different perspective on the marsh landscape: this 146-hectare biological reserve presents the Marais Poitevin as it was preserved in the 19th century.
The Espaces Naturels Sensibles also invite visitors to enjoy nature walks. Admission is free; follow the marked trails and observe the local environmental guidelines. Visitors can explore these protected areas along designated paths rather than experiencing the landscape only from the water. The different options—on foot, by bicycle or by boat—each give a stay in the Marais Poitevin its own focus.
Cycling Routes Between Bocage, Marsh and Coast
In the Marais Poitevin, the network of cycling loops covers almost 800 kilometres; individual circular routes range from 4 to 38 kilometres. La Vélidéale also runs for around 60 kilometres through the Vendée bocage. Viewpoints, the Sèvre Nantaise and historic mills lie along the route. In the Vendée, La Vélodyssée includes 200 kilometres of cycling routes along the coast; more than 60 percent of the route follows paths reserved for cyclists. Route details may change, so check the latest route information before setting out.
The cycling options differ in more than just length: the circular routes in the Marais Poitevin sit alongside routes through the bocage and paths along the coast. The Vendée’s cycling tours, from bocage to coast, combine nature and culture; hilly and flatter sections suit different ages and ability levels. When planning, you can therefore take both the landscape and the type of route into account, rather than treating all the routes as similar outings.
Boatbuilding and Historic Sites
The batai, a traditional marshland boat, represents local boatbuilding craftsmanship and is a precursor to the boats now used on the waterways of the Marais Poitevin. This tradition complements the visible traces of water management: the region’s heritage can be explored through both the structures by the water and the development of the boats used there.
The Abbaye de Maillezais is a Benedictine fortress with thousand-year-old remains in the heart of the Marais Poitevin. Château de Tiffauges offers a different way to explore medieval heritage and is considered the largest medieval site in the region. Performances and activities are part of the offering there; its war-machinery conservatory is considered unique in the world.
The Haras national de la Vendée focuses on the relationship between people and horses. Performances, educational workshops and the national stud farm’s craft expertise are all part of this theme. The Historial de la Vendée, meanwhile, presents 7,000 years of history through modern, engaging and scientific museography. A children’s museum, exhibitions and year-round activities complement the historical presentation. Together, these places showcase different aspects of cultural heritage—from boatbuilding traditions and medieval sites to equestrian craftsmanship and the interpretation of history.
