Sérigné can be explored along two very different hiking routes: the Circuit des Meules offers views of plains and bocage landscapes, while the Circuit du Gué passes through the Longèves Valley to the Lavoir du rendez-vous. Other sights include the Église Saint-Hilaire, the Château de la Girardie and traces of milling. The village brings together scenery, outdoor activity and architectural heritage.
Hiking between plains and the Longèves Valley
The Circuit des Meules is a 14.13-kilometre circular hiking trail that takes about 3 hours and 45 minutes. It starts at the Église de Sérigné and is marked in red. Along the way, the trail offers views of Sérigné’s plains and bocage landscapes. The distance and approximate duration give you a concrete timeframe for the hike; the stated time is a guide.
The Circuit du Gué offers a different experience. It passes through the Longèves Valley to the Lavoir du rendez-vous in Sérigné. In places, the valley is narrow, winding or wide, and it is home to many plant species. The Longèves River also provides a geographical reference point: it runs through Sérigné and flows into the Vendée. The routes therefore offer different points of interest: the Circuit des Meules is described by its distance and approximate duration, while the Circuit du Gué is characterised by the shape of the valley, its plant diversity and its destination at the washhouse.
Church, château and traces of milling
The Église Saint-Hilaire brings together several building phases. Its portal dates from the late 12th century and is the oldest part of the building; the church also includes building phases from the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries. It was listed as a French historic monument by decree of 17 July 1989. The portal provides a chronological anchor for the building’s history, while the other phases reveal how the structure developed over several centuries.
At the Château de la Girardie, historical development and architectural details go hand in hand: it appears to have been built in 1593 by a Girard de Beaurepaire and was remodelled in the 19th century. Large corner towers flank the courtyard; the bases of the towers stand in the water of the former moats. The château and its outbuildings were listed as a historic monument on 27 July 1988. A separate protection measure covers the fireplace in the grand salon, which was partially classified as a historic monument on 18 October 1993.
Local heritage also includes the remains of sandstone millstones. They were intended for windmills or watermills used to make flour, adding a connection to former milling practices to the history of the church and château.
