Pouzauges can be explored from many different angles: its fourteen lanes and medieval fortress offer as much to discover as its wall paintings, paths alongside ponds and a tree-surrounded lake. When planning your trip, consider whether you would like to focus on local history, a route through the countryside or a break by the water. The places and paths described here offer different highlights; there is no need to combine them into a single tour.

Lanes, Fortress and Wall Paintings

Fourteen lanes form a maze between Rue Catherine de Thouars, Avenue des Moulins and the château. At the entrance to each lane, a mosaic reveals its name and what that name means. A QR code next to each mosaic lets you access a 20- to 30-second audio explanation. It covers the history of the name and the choice of illustration. As you look at a mosaic, you can pay attention to both its name and the image associated with it.

The Château of Pouzauges is a medieval fortress with 355 metres of curtain wall. The Church of Notre-Dame du Vieux Pouzauges offers another glimpse into history: it has wall paintings dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, which were rediscovered in 1948 and are arranged across three levels. The year refers to their rediscovery, not the date when the paintings were created. A seven-minute audio presentation is available for visits to the church; check in advance that it is available if you plan to use it. This lets you distinguish between the brief explanations at the mosaics and the longer audio format for a visit to the church.

Paths with Different Highlights

The paths can be distinguished by what they offer. Les Étangs connects Vieux Pouzauges with the Bois de la Cibretière and passes around ten ponds. The path also offers views of Pouzauges and the surrounding area. The Sentier Nature runs from the château through the Bois de la Folie to the twin windmills of Terrier Marteau. Les Manoirs et Logis is a panoramic circular route in Pouzauges that passes two manor houses. You can choose between ponds and views, a route linking the château, woodland and windmills, or a panoramic circuit past two manor houses.

Lake and Windmills: Plan for the Season

The twin windmills of Terrier Marteau were built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Bread, brioche, flour and drinks are sold at the site; availability may vary by season. If buying these products is part of your plans, it is best to check in advance what is currently available.

Lac de l’Espérance offers a different kind of break: this five-hectare, tree-surrounded lake has a landscaped beach and is suitable for swimming, walking and relaxing. There are children’s play equipment and shaded picnic tables on site. Swimming is unsupervised, and bathing conditions and facilities may vary by season; take this into account when planning your visit.

Choose Pouzauges as Your Destination

If you are looking for a hotel in Pouzauges, use the focus of your trip as a starting point: would you like your stay to centre on historic buildings and wall paintings, the paths described here or the lake? The different attractions give you specific ideas to help plan your trip, without needing to fit them all into a single itinerary.
