Saint-Hilaire-la-Forêt offers several ways to explore its culture and landscape: menhirs and dolmens, the Église Saint Hilaire, the Lavoir de la Courolle and a trail through sunken lanes and bocage. The Préhisto'site du CAIRN adds a Neolithic dwelling, a life-size dolmen and demonstrations. The beaches are four kilometres from the town. You can therefore choose different focuses for your stay, from Stone Age monuments and local history to landscapes and proximity to the beach.

Megalithic Sites

At the Menhirs de la Rainière, two menhirs stand side by side. The larger of the two is 4 metres high and 2.50 metres wide. Since 6 July 1995, the Menhirs de la Rainière have been fully listed as historic monuments. The measurements refer to the larger stone; the description thus distinguishes the arrangement of two menhirs from the dimensions of an individual stone. The monument status adds a historical context to these specific features.

The Dolmen de la Sulette is an Angevin-type dolmen and was restored in 1992. It was originally surrounded by a tumulus made entirely of earth. The restoration identifies a specific later intervention, while the tumulus describes the original setting. Both draw attention to different layers of time in the same monument.

Explore Prehistory

The Préhisto'site du CAIRN offers a different way to experience the Neolithic period: visitors can explore a Neolithic dwelling and enter a life-size dolmen. There are also workshops on pottery and jewellery-making, as well as demonstrations of fire-making and hunting. Alongside the stone monuments, the program focuses on dwellings, crafts, fire and hunting as distinct themes. The program may change; check which workshops and demonstrations are available before your visit.

Church, Spring and Tradition

The Église Saint Hilaire was built between the 12th and 19th centuries. Its construction thus spans several centuries, offering a different timeframe from the specific restoration year of the dolmen.

The Lavoir de la Courolle is a former sacred spring. According to local tradition, during years of drought the population would process there. This local tradition connects the site with the theme of drought. The lavoir is open year-round; check local opening information before your visit.

Sunken Lanes and Beach Proximity

The Circuit Vert is 5.4 kilometres long and marked with green signs. It leads through the landscape around Saint-Hilaire-la-Forêt, with its sunken lanes and bocage. Its length and trail-marker colour provide practical reference points for planning; the landscape features offer a distinct focus alongside the historic sites.

The distance to the beaches is another useful reference point: they are four kilometres from the town. When planning your stay, you can choose between different themes—the megalithic monuments, local tradition, a trail through the bocage or the beaches nearby.
