Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez offers several clearly distinct themes to help you plan your trip: sailing, with three water sports centres; salt marshes; the building and everyday life of the Marais Breton-Vendéen; and sites commemorating maritime history and wartime events. To choose where to stay, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: should water sports take centre stage, are you interested in the marsh landscape, or would you mainly like to explore cultural history?

Sailing as a water sports focus

Saint Hilaire Nautisme operates three water sports centres in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez, with a focus on sailing. If sailing is important to your trip, check the operating periods for your travel dates in advance; they may change. The three centres make sailing a clearly defined activity focus in the area.

Salt marshes and ways to visit

The salt marshes of La Vie lie on the right bank of the coastal river La Vie. The educational salt marsh area at Saline du Recoin is open to all visitors and can be explored independently along a signposted circular route. Guided tours are also available during the tourist season; availability may vary. You can therefore choose between two ways to visit: explore the route on your own or join a guided tour, if one is available during your stay.

Building and everyday life at the museum

La Bourrine du Bois-Juquaud is an authentic group of clay buildings with thatched roofs. It documents life in the Marais Breton-Vendéen at the beginning of the 20th century. Since 28 July 2004, the Musée La Bourrine du Bois-Juquaud has held the French designation “Musée de France”. Its visitor route includes exhibition, multimedia and projection areas. Topics covered include the daily lives of the Maraîchins, traditional clay-building techniques and the natural environment of the marsh. The museum’s visitor experience brings together its architecture, way of life and landscape.

Maritime history and historical conflicts

La Livarde preserves and presents documents and objects connected with the maritime activity of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez. In its workshop, La Livarde restores historic vessels; numerous boats have been relaunched as a result. This offers a different historical focus from the museum, whose subject is life and building in the marshland.

The historic Champ de Bataille des Mathes site adds the history of conflict to these cultural themes. Located on a promontory on the former Île de Rié, it commemorates the Wars of Religion and the Vendée Wars. This memorial site can therefore also be clearly distinguished by theme from the museum’s focus on everyday life and building, and from maritime activity.

To help you decide, you can group the attractions by type: sailing is the activity focus, while Saline du Recoin combines the marsh landscape with a self-guided route and guided tours that may be available seasonally. The museum and La Livarde focus on cultural heritage, while the Champ de Bataille commemorates periods of war. Choose your focus based on which of these aspects you would like to define your stay in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez.
