For a culture-focused stay in La Châtaigneraie, there are several specific places to explore: Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church and Villa Lionnet bring the history of architecture and interiors to life, while Vendéthèque adds exhibitions and events. Walking routes, cycling options, the swimming pool and spa offer different experiences. You can therefore plan your time around architecture, cultural events, family activities or wellness.

Church and Villa: Architecture with a History

The neo-Gothic Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church is 60 metres long, and its vaults are 15.50 metres high. The two measurements offer different points of reference for the scale of the building: its length and the height of its interior. The present-day church stands on the site of the former chapel of Saint-Jean Castle, which became the parish church. Here, you can encounter both the chapel’s history and the present-day church building.

The church’s furnishings can also be dated. The large windows in the transept were made by Meuret-Lemoine in 1873. The windows on the north side of the side aisle are by Gaudin and were completed in 1946. The church also houses an organ by Louis Debierre, which was first used in early 1902 and restored in 1982. The windows and organ thus represent different periods in the history of the church’s furnishings.

Villa Lionnet was built in 1874: Félix Lionnet commissioned it, and it was designed by Edmond Guillaume, an architect at the Louvre. The villa and its interior paintings are listed in France’s register of historic monuments. The entrance hall depicts the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius, seen from the island of Capri. This adds a specific visual motif to the history of the building.

Guided tours of the villa are offered in cooperation with the tourist office, including summer tours and openings during Heritage Days. There is no fixed year-round schedule, so check the dates before travelling if you are planning a visit.

Exhibitions, Walking Routes and Leisure Activities

Vendéthèque is a local cultural centre and a branch of the Vendée Department’s Libraries Directorate. Its 140-square-metre exhibition space accommodates a variety of cultural exhibitions, while the auditorium has 58 seats for cultural events. Admission to exhibitions and events is free. As arrangements may change, check the latest information before your visit.

The Chemin des Peintres offers a different way to explore: this cultural and interactive trail is in the centre of La Châtaigneraie and is designed for the whole family. Younger children can also enjoy a splash pad at the intercommunal swimming pool, a water-play area for children aged 0 to 6. The pool also has a lap pool. As individual facilities may change during renovations or expansions, check the current facilities before your visit. The Lavoir du Chatenay remains in operation and is maintained by the municipal administration.

If you are planning a cycling trip, the La Châtaigneraie–Pouzauges loop starts in La Châtaigneraie. The final section of the Vouvant–La Châtaigneraie loop follows a former railway line towards La Châtaigneraie. These route sections offer different reference points to help you choose a route; check trail conditions before setting off.

For a wellness break, Spa Marinélys offers facial and body treatments, as well as a traditional oriental hammam and a whirlpool bath. Treatments and facilities may change, so check the current offerings if you are planning your visit around them. Le Comptoir des Vins offers themed workshops on wine tasting and grape varieties. As dates matter when planning your trip, it is a good idea to check them in advance.
