In Fontenay-le-Comte, you can choose from a range of discoveries: the history of the Château de Terre-Neuve, a museum designated as a “Musée de France,” gardens and parks, and a 7 km urban circular route. This gives you different ways to shape your stay, rather than putting every visit under a single theme. At the château, the building’s history and interior furnishings are of interest; the green spaces, meanwhile, differ in their medieval remains, English landscape garden and recreational activities. The Transfontenaysienne adds a named route for cycling or walking to the mix.

Château and Museum History

The Château de Terre-Neuve was built in 1590 by Nicolas Rapin and is protected as a historic monument. In the first room on the tour, perfectly restored original wood panelling from the chamber of Louis XIV and the Molière theatre at the Château de Chambord adorns the room. This brings specific interior details into focus alongside the year it was built.

The historic Hôtel de Grimoüard was built in 1741 for the knight Pierre-Marthe de Grimoüard, reusing the cellars of an earlier estate. Its building history therefore identifies both the person who commissioned it and a specific way of reusing older structures. The dates of the two buildings are clearly distinct: 1590 for the Château de Terre-Neuve and 1741 for the Hôtel de Grimoüard.

The Musée de Fontenay-le-Comte has held the designation “Musée de France” since February 10, 2003. This date refers to the designation, not to the museum’s founding. If you are planning a visit, please check the latest access information.

Parks with Different Features

Parc Baron contains the remains of a former feudal castle, a tower, fortification walls and a medieval garden. The Jardin de la Mairie offers a different feature: it is an English landscape garden with a pond, swans, a small bridge and remarkable trees. The distinction is clear when choosing which park to focus on: castle remains and medieval features shape the scene at Parc Baron, while the landscaped grounds and garden features take centre stage at the Jardin de la Mairie.

Located in the town centre, Parc Espierre offers wooden sculptures, children’s play equipment, a table tennis table and an area for picnics or playing football. Artistic features, play and various recreational activities therefore come together in one place. Parc Baron Aventure offers another family-oriented activity, with nets suspended between trees. This makes it a different option from the play equipment at Parc Espierre.

Circular Route and Natural Area

La Transfontenaysienne is a 7 km urban circular route that starts in Fontenay-le-Comte and is suitable for cycling or walking. Check the route details before setting off. The Transfontenaysienne also provides access to the Vallée du Seillot, a natural area. This gives you two distinct points of reference to choose from: a circular route with a specified length and two stated uses, and a natural destination accessible via the route.
