Saint-Hilaire-Des-Loges combines a distinctive heritage with various ways to explore the town and its landscape: a historic church, signposted walking trails, a cycling route with a detour into town, as well as horse-riding options and seasonal pick-your-own produce. When planning, it helps to choose between a short loop through the town centre, longer routes through the countryside and activities beyond walking.
The church and local history
The Église de Saint-Hilaire-des-Loges has been listed as a Monument historique since 29 October 1926. Its architecture combines Romanesque and Gothic elements. The Romanesque capitals feature carvings and figurative depictions—specific details that shape the church’s cultural character.
The present-day site of the covered market halls is part of the town’s early history: a Merovingian church was built there around 540. From the Middle Ages onwards, a textile industry developed in Saint-Hilaire-Des-Loges, associated with a fabric called Droguet. The site thus brings together different periods: an early ecclesiastical history and a later tradition of textile production.
On foot: a town loop or countryside routes
Several signposted walking trails range from 2.2 to 15 kilometres. Two circular routes highlight their different focuses: the 2.2-kilometre trail is for exploring the town centre; the Sentier de la Vergne is an approximately 10-kilometre loop through the countryside around Saint-Hilaire-Des-Loges. This gives you a choice between a shorter town loop and a longer outing in the countryside, without conflating the two routes. As route information may change, it is advisable to check the current route before setting out.
The Aire de pique-nique de la Pompe is a starting point for walks. It has toilets, four shaded tables and games for children. This makes it possible to start a walk and take a break at the same place; the listed facilities also offer practical guidance for spending time there.
Cycling, horse riding and the Autise
There is also a cycling route into the town: the Vendée Vélo Circuit 31 runs via a detour from Fosse Bouret to Saint-Hilaire-Des-Loges and its heritage sites. The circuit follows the meanders of the Autise through flood-prone terrain and crosses small bridges. The detour into town and the landscape sections described give cycling a different focus from the walking loops.
The Autise flows alongside Saint-Hilaire-Des-Loges and is a second-category river for freshwater fishing. L'école du cheval offers another local activity: pony rides and horse rides are available year-round; its offerings also include riding lessons and vaulting. Those who want to plan their stay around more than just the church and walking trails will find different options for their day.
Seasonal produce
Les Vergers de Vendée offers locally grown seasonal produce for pick-your-own at its Saint-Hilaire-Des-Loges location. This adds a connection to seasonal produce to the cultural and outdoor activities. As availability depends on the season, it is worth asking in advance which products will be available during your planned visit.
