Historic buildings, leisure activities at Bibrou Pond and an escape game offer different ways to enjoy a stay in La Mothe-Achard. The town brings together themes from different eras and leisure activities, from the Vieux Château and the market halls to trails, fishing and a virtual game about the town’s history. You can therefore focus your time here on cultural heritage, outdoor activities or a day out with a picnic.
The Market Halls, Château and Local History
The market halls have stood in the town’s central square since the Middle Ages. The current halls are a Baltard-style pavilion built in 1924 to plans by architect Joseph Libaudière. The façade bears the coat of arms and motto of the former commune of La Mothe-Achard: “Ex Virtute Nobilitas”. This brings together the town’s long history at its central square and the specific construction date of the present pavilion.
The Vieux Château was built in 1773 on the site of an earlier castle that had been fortified in the 11th and 12th centuries. These dates mark different stages: the fortifications belong to the earlier castle, while 1773 is the date the Vieux Château was built. During the Vendée Wars, Saint-Jacques Church was spared the fire of 1794; at that time, it served as an ammunition depot and stable.
