Grues lies in the heart of the Marais Poitevin; the Lay forms one of the town’s waterways. There are several ways to plan your trip: explore dikes and marshlands on foot, cycle through the area, or discover the Marais Poitevin on a boat trip or by canoe. Other highlights include the history of the Église Saint-Nicolas, the Prieuré de Grues, and an art studio offering art and painting classes. Which of these aspects interests you most can shape the focus of your days.

Dikes, Marshland and Waterways

You can explore the area around Grues on foot or by bicycle. The town has walking areas along the dikes and in the Lay’s floodplains. The La Digue en terre trail offers a distinctive view of the landscape: from a limestone hill, the view stretches across extensive marshlands.

Depending on the season, you can spot animals and plants typical of the Marais Poitevin along the trails. The time of year therefore also influences the nature-focused side of your trip: if observing plants and animals is one of your reasons for visiting, you can take seasonal changes into account when planning. The water offers a different perspective. Visitors can take boat trips and go canoeing in the Marais Poitevin near Grues.

The waterways around Grues are also used, particularly for fishing. Anglers can catch zander, pike, carp and eels there. These offer different options for planning your day: paths let you explore the area on foot or by bicycle, while boat trips, canoeing and fishing are directly connected with the waterways. You can decide whether to spend more time on the trails, enjoying a water activity, or doing both.

Church History and Art Studio

The history of the church buildings spans two distinct periods. The Église Saint-Nicolas dates from the late 19th century and was designed by the architect Victor Clair. An older Église Saint-Nicolas, dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, was set on fire on January 7, 1569, during the Huguenots’ passage through the area. The Prieuré de Grues also has early historical roots: it is mentioned in a text from before 1306 and was dependent on the Abbaye de Saint-Michel-en-l'Herm when it was founded. This chronology distinguishes the later church building from the medieval history of the priory and the older church.

The Galerie-Atelier Jean-Louis Renaudin displays paintings and unique objects made from wood or pebbles collected on beaches. Jean-Louis Renaudin also offers acrylic painting classes for all levels, including beginners and children aged six and over. A class may require prior confirmation of availability. If a class is important to your plans, check availability in advance.

Markets and Regional Produce

Markets in Grues offer specialities from the Vendée and, in particular, the Marais Poitevin. Regional produce and products from short supply chains are also highlighted across the wider area. The selection and participating vendors may vary by market day, so take the relevant market day into account when planning.
