A 50-metre-high bell tower leads directly to one of La Boissière-de-Montaigu’s historic landmarks: the neo-Gothic Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption. Alongside it, castle estates, hiking trails and events reflect the different sides of the commune.

Church and Castle History

The main construction phases of Château d’Asson date from the 15th and 18th centuries. The castle is partially protected as a historic monument. The protection, registered on 1 April 1986, covers the façades and roofs of the castle and the former castle’s pavilion, the chapel and the landscaped park. The estate is privately owned.

The church also reveals several phases of construction. Its main masonry was completed in 1916; the stained-glass windows were installed in several stages between 1918 and 1929. The windows in the side aisles, dating from 1929, depict the seven sacraments. Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption in the town centre is open to the public during the day. Access may change locally, so it is advisable to check shortly before your visit.

Hiking Trails and Lac de la Bultière

Lac de la Bultière is a 72-hectare artificial reservoir located in the communes of La Boissière-de-Montaigu and Chavagnes-en-Paillers. The commune also has around twelve kilometres of hiking trails. Canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards can be rented at the Base nautique de la Bultière; check operating conditions before setting off.

The Les Logis circular trail starts at Place de la Mairie and is marked in yellow. It follows sunken lanes past the former manor houses of the lords of La Boissière and explores the commune’s historical heritage. The La Bultière trail starts at the Fortécuyère car park and is marked in black with the designation ENS (Espace naturel sensible). Check the markings on site. The two trails therefore differ in their starting points and markings; Les Logis also has an explicitly historical focus.

Cycle to Private Estates

The Les logis en pleine nature cycle route starts and ends at Place de l’Église. It passes four private estates: the 15th-century Château d’Asson, the 16th-century Logis de la Raillière, the 15th-century Logis de la Fortécuyère and the 16th-century Logis de la Mazure in Saint-Georges-de-Montaigu. A short section of the route runs along Lac de la Bultière. The Logis and pavilion of Fortécuyère have a 17th-century appearance; in 1741, the wife of Charles François Le Jay de Mianne had a chapel built there.

Festivals and Local Culture

La Saint Glinglin takes place every two years at Bois des Brosses. The festival includes costume parades and floats made by the residents themselves. Décors de rues is also held every two years: La Boissière-de-Montaigu takes on the look of bygone days, with historic façades and former shops. Festival Canasson is a concert event held over a weekend at Bois des Brosses and organised by the local association SONID’ART.

The Bibliothèque de La Boissière-de-Montaigu has more than 3,000 books. It also offers monthly reading sessions for babies and themed evenings. These regular cultural events provide another glimpse of community life, complementing the historic buildings, trails and festivals.
