In La Garnache, history can be discovered on different scales: the immersive film brings together five stories in one session, while the streetscape and sacred buildings reveal traces from various centuries. There is also a hilly bocage landscape, a natural area with wetlands, and a Wednesday market featuring various types of vendors. If you would like to combine culture with rural impressions, these themes offer different starting points for choosing your stay.

Experience and understand history

The immersive film “Notre Histoire à 360°” brings together five historical stories about La Garnache in one session and is presented as a virtual reality film. La Garnache’s heritage trail introduces local legends, historic monuments and preserved traditions. The formats have different focuses: the film brings together several stories, while the trail also explores local legends and traditions.

The ticket for La Garnache’s heritage presentation grants access to the immersive room at the Lavoir and the costumed presentation. As ticket inclusions may change, check the latest information before your visit.

The former château is partly protected as a Monument historique. The neighboring motte castrale already existed in the 10th century and was equipped with a wooden keep. The course of the Grand’Rue also tells the story of the town’s former layout: its winding alignment recalls the former medieval fortified town center. Thus, a historic structure stands alongside a present-day street layout that evokes the former fortifications.

Construction of the Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption began in 1899, and it was completed in 1926 in the Neo-Romanesque style. The Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Victoire dates back to the 14th century and was extensively restored in the 18th century by Father de Montfort. The sacred buildings can therefore be distinguished by period: the church is associated with construction beginning in the late 19th century and completion in the early 20th century, while the chapel is associated with earlier origins and restoration in the 18th century. The church houses high-quality furnishings and a remarkable banner commemorating the Battle of Lepanto.

Bocage landscapes and trails

If you plan your market visit in advance, check the current hours and vendor selection, as dates and participation may change. This makes it easy to plan a market visit as part of your stay without conflating it with the other cultural or landscape themes.
