The church, priory and paths towards the Marais give Mouzeuil-Saint-Martin two main themes: heritage and landscape. When planning your trip, you can decide whether architectural history and art, or walking and wetland scenery, should take precedence.

Church and Priory: Different Periods

The Église de la Sainte-Trinité was completed in 1158 and served as the priory chapel. Its Gothic choir dates from the 13th to 14th centuries and has a rib-vaulted ceiling. The church thus brings together features from different periods: its completion in 1158 and the choir’s later Gothic design belong to separate building phases.

The Église also contains a Descent from the Cross painted on canvas by Pierre II Besnard of Angers in 1685. This work adds a distinctly later artistic element alongside the medieval architectural features. Together, the choir and painting offer two different points of interest if you are interested in the church’s architecture or art.

Part of the Geoffroy d’Estissac priory complex remains, which Geoffroy d’Estissac rebuilt in 1540. The logis features the prelate’s coat of arms and perspective windows. These details give the surviving part of the building a distinct architectural character. The priory was fully restored by the Vendée Department in 2020 and now houses the municipal library. Château and Gardens

The Château de la Rivière brings together two periods of construction: it includes a 19th-century château and part of the original 16th-century château. Both are surrounded by a park. The park includes French, English and exotic gardens, as well as wooded areas and meadows.

This makes the site different from the church and priory: there, the focus is on sacred architecture, a surviving complex and individual architectural features; at the château, two building phases meet different garden styles and parkland elements. If you want to consider both cultural history and landscape during your stay, this estate offers two different themes in one place.

Walking Routes and Wetlands

Walking paths lead from the washhouse towards the Marais. The “La Corde” circular trail starts in Mouzeuil-Saint-Martin, is 14 kilometres long and runs through the Marais Poitevin. If you are looking for a route with a specified distance, La Corde’s length is a useful planning detail; for the paths by the washhouse, the stated direction is towards the Marais. A Romanesque bridge over the Corde can also be discovered at the start of the circular route. Check current route information before setting out.

The Réserve des Huttes is a wetland area between Nalliers and Mouzeuil-Saint-Martin. Its described landscape features include ditches and canals, flood meadows, hedgerows and paths. The destination’s natural setting can therefore be considered in two ways: La Corde is a named circular trail with a stated distance, while the Réserve is characterised by its wetland landscape and its location between the two communes. Take these differences into account when planning your trip if you are choosing between a specific walking route and a broader landscape experience.
