Sainte-Gemme-la-Plaine combines a distinctive architectural history with forest trails and an equestrian centre. When planning your stay, you can choose from a range of interests: the development of religious and manor-house architecture, walking through forest vegetation, or year-round riding lessons. The buildings offer tangible points of reference, from the 14th century to architectural styles of the 18th century. It is also important to note that La Chevallerie is now privately owned; public access should not be assumed.

Architectural history from church to manor house

The Église of Sainte-Gemme-la-Plaine was mentioned in the 14th century as a priory and parish church. It was listed as a historic monument by decree on 16 February 1995. The Logis de Chavigny received this status on 3 February 1999. These two dates refer to monument listings, while the church’s medieval mention establishes an earlier historical context.

La Chevallerie is an 18th-century manor house. Its exterior layout includes two round towers, side pavilions and a central triangular pediment. Inside, wood panelling and a staircase with a wrought-iron railing have been preserved. The features range from the building’s layout to details of its interior design. As La Chevallerie is now privately owned, you should not assume that it is open to the public.

The Logis de la Popellinière brings together several building phases: it consists of two wings dating from the 15th and 16th centuries; the older wing contains elements from the 12th century. Both wings are arranged around an octagonal tower. A stair tower was built around 1570 by Lancelot Voysin. It retains a stair railing set into the wall, along with carved door and window surrounds. Voysin was born at the Logis de la Popellinière in 1541; some of the surviving buildings date from the 15th century. In this way, the architectural details connect with a specific figure from the town’s history.

Forest trails and riding lessons

When walking in the forest of Sainte-Gemme-la-Plaine, trails pass through stands of downy, pedunculate and holm oaks. Other shrubs and wild daffodils are also part of the vegetation described. For those interested in nature and plants, this offers more than a generic woodland setting: the trails pass through varied stands, whose trees and wildflowers give a tangible impression of the landscape.

Another option is riding lessons at the Centre Equestre de Sainte Gemme la Plaine. The programme, with horses and ponies, runs all year round and is open to beginners as well as riders looking to improve their skills. The equestrian centre is located on the edge of a 150-hectare state forest. Forest walks and riding lessons therefore offer different ways to shape your stay: trails through the vegetation on the one hand, and lessons with horses or ponies on the other.
