As a destination, Maillezais combines historic buildings with the landscape of the Marais Poitevin. The Abbaye de Maillezais, the Église Saint-Nicolas, two trails and the chance to explore by boat or canoe offer different points of interest. You can tailor your visit to what you would like to discover: history, village streets, marshland or waterways.

Abbey, church and summer programme

The Abbaye de Maillezais has a history stretching back more than 1,000 years. Over the course of its history, it has been a Benedictine abbey, a diocese and a Protestant fortress. These different functions give the abbey a layered historical context, encompassing religious and political roles. By including historic sights in your visit, you can discover different aspects of a place’s long history here.

The Église Saint-Nicolas in Maillezais was classified as a historic monument on 31 December 1840. The church and the abbey therefore offer different cultural and historical perspectives: the abbey’s long history and its various functions are central, while the church’s classification has a precise date. During the summer season, the Abbaye de Maillezais offers guided tours, performances and musical events. Check the latest dates before visiting, as the programme is seasonal and may change.

At the edge of the Marais Poitevin

The centre of Maillezais lies at the edge of the Marais Poitevin; the marsh is particularly close to the village on its western side. At the Grand Port de Maillezais, the Embarcadère de l’Abbaye is located directly at the foot of the Abbaye de Maillezais and within the classified area of the Marais poitevin. From there, you can explore the Marais Poitevin by boat or canoe, with a boatman or on your own. This gives you the choice between exploring with a boatman and travelling independently. It combines a specific starting point at the Grand Port with the opportunity to discover the marshland from the water.

Two trails, two perspectives

The Les Levées walking trail starts at the church square in Maillezais and passes through the Marais Poitevin’s two major landscape areas: the wet marsh and the drained marsh. Along the way, it passes the Aqueduc de Maillé and continues to a point in front of the Abbaye Saint Pierre de Maillezais. The trail is marked in yellow and follows a clockwise route. There is parking and a toilet at the starting point on the church square—useful landmarks when setting out.

The Sentier de Pierre et d’Eau offers a different focus. This cultural trail is 2 km long, runs through the streets of Maillezais and is designed as a discovery walk of about an hour. Along the route, 11 information panels share useful information, while ground markings show the way. The trail is accessible to everyone. As route details may be revised, check the latest route description before setting out.

To choose between the two walking trails, consider which perspective you are looking for. The Sentier de Pierre et d’Eau combines a stated distance and approximate duration with information panels in the village streets. Les Levées, on the other hand, passes through wet and drained marshland and by the Aqueduc de Maillé, ending in front of the abbey. If this sequence of landscapes matters to you, Les Levées offers the right thematic focus; for a discovery walk around the village with a defined duration, the cultural trail is another option. A boat or canoe from the Grand Port adds an exploration on the water to these walking routes.
