Chaix can be explored from two distinct perspectives: its architectural history and the paths along the Vendée. Pont Eiffel was built in 1882 to plans by the famous architect Gustave Eiffel and connects the two places of Auchay and Chaix. The river shapes another aspect of choosing what to do: hiking and cycling routes each offer their own highlights. This makes it easier to plan your stay around the focus you want rather than a long list of sights.
Bridges and paths along the Vendée
La Lutinière is an easy 3.6-kilometre circular route. It passes through a wild, green landscape of steep wooded slopes and wide meadows, reaching the banks of the Vendée. Along the walking trail are an old Eiffel-type bridge and a modern bridge connecting Auzay and Chaix. The bridges give the route an architectural dimension; the slopes, meadows and riverbank define its landscape.
The Le Pêcheur cycling route follows the Vendée River through Auzay and Chaix. It is easy and takes one hour. When choosing an activity, you can therefore compare a circular walking route with a stated distance and an easy cycling route with a stated duration. The routes also relate to the river in different ways: La Lutinière reaches the banks, while Le Pêcheur runs along the Vendée.
The connections between places should also be distinguished: Pont Eiffel connects Auchay and Chaix, while the modern bridge on La Lutinière connects Auzay and Chaix. The two bridges therefore have specific but different connections to the places named. Their Eiffel connections are also not the same: Pont Eiffel was built to Gustave Eiffel’s plans, while La Lutinière has an old Eiffel-type bridge. The first refers to an architect’s plans; the second is a type designation.
Culture and architectural history
Chaix’s architectural history extends beyond the bridge. At the La Forêt-Nesdeau estate, the listing as a historic monument on 25 October 2010 covers the façades and roofs of the main residence. The Domaine de la Forêt-Nesdeau is notable for its exterior iron fittings and the main staircase railing. The estate includes a dovecote with a defensive function, considered a comparatively rare building type. Unlike Pont Eiffel, whose historical significance is defined by its construction date and the connection between Auchay and Chaix, La Forêt-Nesdeau draws attention to the scope of protection and individual architectural features.
Picnics and fishing
The picnic areas offer a distinct focus alongside the routes. The Aire de pique-nique du Port in Chaix is a shaded area with two tables, where fishing is also possible. The Aire de pique-nique de Massigny is located along the Vendée. At Port, the shade, tables and fishing are the main attractions; Massigny offers a location along the Vendée. Facilities and fishing opportunities at the Aire du Port may change, so check these details before your visit.
