Saint-Hilaire-le-Vouhis combines historic heritage with museums and trails through the landscape around the Vouraie. A notable starting point for planning your trip is the Manoir de la Chevillonnière: this manor house dates from the early 15th century and was expanded in the second half of the 15th century. There are also two options for a loop around the lake, as well as the shorter Sentier des Bruyères. You can plan your stay around culture, nature or a particular route.

Manor House, Church and Local History

The Manoir de la Chevillonnière preserves interior plasterwork, traces of painted decoration and original features in its interiors. Its construction and subsequent expansion point to two distinct phases in the history of the manor house. The site is therefore interesting for more than its age: the surviving details of its interiors also offer a tangible impression of what has been preserved from its building history.

The bell tower of the church in Saint-Hilaire-le-Vouhis stands on a hill. According to local historical tradition, it is said to have served as a navigation marker for sailors before the Vendée marshes were drained. In La Roulière, a hamlet near the Petit Lay, stands the birthplace of Henri Adolphe Archereau. In Saint-Hilaire-le-Vouhis, he is credited with being the first to illuminate the Place de la Concorde in Paris with electric light. The church, birthplace and manor house offer different ways to explore local history, from a local tradition to a historical claim with a connection extending beyond Paris.

Museums and Visits by Appointment

The “Ici le temps s’est arrêté” Museum displays vehicles and everyday objects from different periods between 1886 and 1980. Guided tours are available by prior appointment from April 1 to October 15. The Musée des Outils d’Antan focuses on agricultural tools and tools used in the many trades that once shaped village life; it is open year-round by prior appointment. Both museums explore everyday history, but with different focuses: vehicles and objects from several decades in one, tools from agriculture and various trades in the other. Check visiting dates before your trip and arrange guided tours in advance.

Trails by the Vouraie and Natural Areas

The Sentier de la Vouraie offers two options for a loop around the lake: 12.7 or 15.8 kilometres. The trail is open to hikers, mountain bikers and horse riders. For a shorter walking route, the Sentier des Bruyères is a 6.1-kilometre trail described as easy. It starts at Place de la Mairie in Saint-Hilaire-le-Vouhis. The three distances give you clear points of reference when choosing a route; both Vouraie options go around the lake.

The natural areas also give the surrounding region its own character. The Vallée de la Vouraie et vallons annexes is a continental ZNIEFF type 2 and includes Saint-Hilaire-le-Vouhis. The slopes near La Ritaudière are of particular interest for their insect and plant life. One of the few known sites for Veronica triphyllos in the Armorican Massif is located there. Otters and genets, among other species, find habitats in the wooded valley bottoms of the Vallée de la Vouraie, which are deeply incised in places. These details describe different natural values: the biological importance of certain slopes, as well as the habitats in the valley bottoms.

Competitions and Practical Planning

National driving competitions are held every year in the impressive setting of the Chevillonnière. If a competition is important to your travel plans, check the specific event dates in advance. Together with the historic sites and museums, these offer a range of reasons to visit, without requiring a particular day or fixed itinerary.

When planning your museum visits, it is especially important to note the difference in visiting arrangements: guided tours at the “Ici le temps s’est arrêté” Museum are available by prior appointment from April 1 to October 15. The Musée des Outils d’Antan is open year-round by appointment. The exhibitions complement each other thematically, but visit arrangements depend on the museum in question. When looking for a hotel in Saint-Hilaire-le-Vouhis, you can first decide whether your trip will focus on the manor house and local history, a museum visit, a lakeside route or a driving competition.
