Maillé offers several different reasons to stay: water engineering, small electric boat trips and historic buildings. From the Romanesque church portal to the vanished Fort du Dognon, its traces span several centuries. The mill also tells its own story, shaped by its restoration.

Water Engineering and Boat Trips

The Aqueduc de Maillé consists of two aqueducts. They carry arms of the river over the canal without mixing with its water. Their distinctive feature is the separation of the two watercourses: the river arms cross the canal while the river water remains separate from the canal water. Visitors wishing to discover Maillé through its waterworks will find a specific technical detail here.

Trips on small electric boats are offered from the Capucines landing stage in Maillé harbour. On board, you can sample the famous préfou, a speciality made by the local baker, and an artisanally produced drink made with local hops. This gives the trip a culinary dimension, too. As operator details and the offering may change, we recommend checking the trip and tasting option in advance for your preferred date.

Buildings and History

The Église Notre Dame de l'Assomption was built at the beginning of the 12th century. The only surviving testament to its Romanesque origins is the portal. The date of construction and the surviving detail offer different insights: the church dates from the early 12th century, while the portal bears witness to its Romanesque origins.

The Moulin de la Pichonnière was restored in 2007. It regained its roof, sails and mechanism. The mill is privately owned. Unlike the church, the focus here is on its restoration history: the year and the restored parts describe what was brought back during the renovation.

Fort du Dognon has disappeared; no remains are visible above ground. It stood on the island of the same name and was part of the fortifications built during the Wars of Religion in the second half of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century. They served to control the marshes and the Sèvre Niortaise river. This timespan clearly distinguishes its history from that of the church, which was built at the beginning of the 12th century.
