In Sainte-Florence, you can choose between forest trails, a cycling route and the artistic heritage of Gaston Chaissac. The Forêt domaniale de l’Herbergement is at the heart of the nature experience, while the Chaissac theme brings together the family’s history and a guided artistic activity. When planning your trip, it is worth starting by deciding what you would like to do: walk in the forest, choose a cycling route, or set aside time for a visit that requires a reservation?

Forest trails and navigation

The Forêt domaniale de l’Herbergement covers 350 hectares and is dominated by conifers, especially maritime pines. There is a 5 km hiking trail marked in yellow. Its length and markings are two specific points of reference for this route. Another detail concerns the 3 km forest avenue that connects the D13 and D137 through the forest. These two distances describe different things: a walking trail and a connection between two roads. When planning your time in the forest, it helps to distinguish these options by their function rather than treat them as variations of the same route.

The Sentier de l’Herbergement starts on Route de Chauché, at the forest car park. Along the way, hikers can discover Gaston Chaissac’s latrines and the Logis de La Boulaye. These named destinations give the walk a specific cultural connection. You can therefore choose the Sentier based on the sights along the way, while the yellow-marked footpath is described by its length and markings.

Cycling route linked to Chaissac

For a cycling trip, there is an 11 km route called “Sur les pas de Gaston Chaissac” (“In the footsteps of Gaston Chaissac”). It has signs pointing out the places along the route. The cycling route starts at Sainte-Florence town hall and can also be joined in the forest. This gives you two possible starting points; the signs provide information about the places along the way. Compared with the 5 km footpath, this is not simply a longer version of the same walk, but a separate cycling option with a different route length and its own way of providing directions. When choosing, you can therefore consider both your mode of transport and the kind of information available along the way.

Chaissac: historical connection and workshop

The Ancienne école was a former municipal public school where the Chaissac family lived from 1948 to 1961. This period makes the building a historical point of reference for the Chaissac theme. At Espace Gaston Chaissac, an artistic workshop for adults and children follows the visit. A facilitator leads the activity. The visit and workshop together last 1.5 hours; reservations are required.

The activities differ in one practical respect when planning your stay: for the walking and cycling routes, the route type, length and starting point are the main considerations; for the workshop, a reservation and the total duration are key. If you would like to do both, first choose between the walking trail and cycling route, then plan the workshop, which requires a reservation, as a separate activity. This lets you fit the guided cultural activity, with its specific duration, into the rest of your itinerary.
