When planning your trip to La Tardiere, you can choose from different focuses: hiking trails of varying lengths, a fishing and picnic spot, views of the Vendée countryside, and a Protestant memorial site. As you plan, consider whether you would prefer to take a longer route, enjoy a break outdoors or explore local history.
Hiking trails: route length and how to get around
The Sentier des Fougères is an 11.5-kilometre hiking trail that starts at the church in La Tardière (Terval). It is marked in yellow and runs clockwise. It also offers the chance to discover former mills. Details about its length, markings and direction provide specific points of reference when choosing a hike; its connection to the former mills adds a historical dimension to the route.
The Chemin des Châtaignes covers a different distance: it is almost 80 kilometres long, fully marked and equipped with explanatory panels. La Tardiere is one of four starting points for the 76-kilometre main loop. The route can be followed on foot or by mountain bike. The two trails therefore differ not only in length: the Chemin also offers mountain biking, while the Sentier is described as a hiking trail.
A waterside break and information along the way
The Plan d'eau de l'Etruyère is an artificial reservoir covering 4.5 hectares. It is used by anglers and is suitable as a picnic stop for families and hikers. If you do not want to plan your trip solely around the distance you cover, you can schedule a break outdoors here. Fishing and picnicking give the lake a different focus from the two hiking trails.
Another trail passes through the Pépinières Ripaud and is freely accessible. Around ten playful, informative panels accompany the route. This trail can offer you a different way to explore: rather than choosing a route based only on its length, you can also take the panels’ information and playful design into account. The number is approximate: there are around ten panels.
La Tardiere’s elevated position also shapes your stay: it offers views of the Vendée countryside. This landscape feature complements the specific trail destinations and the break by the lake. If you would like to consider the view as well as a route when choosing your travel experiences, this perspective offers another point of reference.
A memorial site with a clearly defined history
The Chapelle de la Brossardière is a Protestant memorial site. It is associated with the killing of 31 people during a Sunday service on 13 August 1595. The chapel was built on the former site of the temple. Both the former temple site and the commemoration of a precisely dated event are therefore central to this place. Its history differs significantly from the scenic and active highlights of the trails: it gives La Tardiere a historical dimension that can be explored through a specific event.
