Roman coin finds, an ancient road near Pont Buaille and a medieval town center give Longèves a distinctive cultural and historical profile. The Musée Belliard complements this with an exhibition on the First French Empire and the Napoleonic general Augustin-Daniel Belliard. The subjects therefore range from archaeological traces to local and architectural history, as well as an exhibition about a later period.

Musée Belliard: exhibition and planning your visit

The Musée Belliard presents an exhibition on the First French Empire and the Napoleonic general Augustin-Daniel Belliard. Its subject matter links a historical period with a named historical figure, offering a clear cultural and historical point of reference in Longèves. If you plan to visit the Musée Belliard, check the visiting arrangements.

The municipal website lists 14 July and Heritage Days as opening days for the Musée Belliard; for the rest of the year, it lists visits by appointment with the town hall secretariat. Arrangements may change before your trip, so check them in advance.

Roman traces near Pont Buaille

Roman coins minted between 260 and 275 AD under the Gallo-Roman emperor Postumus have been found within the municipality of Longèves. Near Pont Buaille, the ancient Roman road known as the “chemin vers” crosses Longèves. The coin find links the Roman history to a specific period, while the road’s name anchors it at Pont Buaille. Roman history is thus reflected both in a datable find and in the course of an ancient road.

Town center, church and memorials

The medieval town center of Longèves was shaped by the Seigneurie de la Court and the church. A Romanesque church was built on the site of the church of Longèves in the 12th century; the church was burned down in 1568. The term “Romanesque” also situates the building in architectural history. The Seigneurie de la Court and the church are also two defining landmarks of the town center. The Croix de la Barre adds a distinct memorial: it was erected in 1702 to commemorate a mission.

Pahu: sarcophagi and local tradition

Numerous sarcophagi were discovered near the present-day Pahu farm; some are said to date from the Merovingian period. The dating therefore applies to some of the finds. The area around Pahu was probably wooded, and place names refer to fairies, magicians and sorcerers. At Pahu, archaeological finds sit alongside cautiously worded traditions about the landscape and place names.

Putting the historical periods in context

The dates refer to different events: 260 to 275 AD for the minting of the coins, the 12th century for the construction of the Romanesque church, 1568 for the fire, and 1702 for the erection of the Croix de la Barre. This distinction helps you explore local history by subject: archaeological finds, architectural history and religious commemoration. The Musée Belliard complements this perspective with its focus on the First French Empire.
