Lac de la Bultière is an artificial lake surrounded by a protected natural environment. Together with the town’s historical sites, it offers a distinctive focus for a stay in Chavagnes-en-Paillers: lakeside scenery and local history can both feature in your plans.

Lake, walking trail and fishing

The Sentier du lac de La Bultière is a circular trail around the lake. It is about 13 kilometres long, with an average walking time of 3 hours and 15 minutes. These estimates make it easy to plan for the trail: it takes up a substantial block of time in your day. If you’re looking for a walk with a clear indication of how long it takes, you can use these figures as a guide.

The Base de loisirs de la Bultière also gives a sense of the scale of the lakeside landscape: it offers more than 10 kilometres of unspoilt shoreline and a water surface of almost 80 hectares. Anglers can fish for coarse fish such as roach, bleak and bream on the Parcours de pêche du lac de la Bultière. Local fishing regulations may apply.

Town centre and cultural heritage

The Circuit du patrimoine de Chavagnes-en-Paillers passes through the town centre and along the river La Petite Maine. The Musée des Ursulines forms part of the trail’s historical context and tells some of the story of the town. The museum can be visited by prior appointment. The Circuit therefore has a different focus from the route around the lake: here, local history and the route through the town centre and river landscape take centre stage.

The church in Chavagnes-en-Paillers was rebuilt from 1846 to 1853 using tuff stone and has a bell tower. Its furnishings include a Baroque organ, installed in 1998. It has an 18th-century Germanic aesthetic and is the only instrument of its kind in the Vendée département. The history of the building and that of the organ are two distinct aspects of the local cultural heritage.

Place des Martyrs commemorates the massacre of about a hundred men, women and children in Chavagnes on 23 February 1794 during the Vendée War. A digital exhibition created in 2016 offers another historical perspective: it tells the story of the Jewish children who were sheltered in Chavagnes-en-Paillers during the Second World War and the families who took them in.

One of the town’s traditional celebrations is the Fête d'La Brioche, organised by the local festival committee. It adds a communal dimension to the town’s historical and landscape attractions.

Themes for your stay

There are several different themes to choose from when planning your stay: the Sentier du lac offers a clear guide for a longer walk, with its approximate distance and average walking time. The Circuit du patrimoine focuses on the town centre, the Petite Maine and the cultural heritage. Fishing adds another activity by the lake; bear in mind that the Musée des Ursulines requires a prior appointment. You can plan your stay around what matters most to you, whether that is scenery, outdoor activity or local history.
