In Pardubice District, horse culture is part of a shaped and still-used landscape. The cultural landscape of Kladruby nad Labem lies in the Elbe lowlands, in the Střední Polabí area. It comprises fields, meadows, fenced pastures, a landscaped park, wooded areas, buildings and farmsteads. At the same time, Kladruber horses bred for ceremonial carriage work are still raised and trained there today. The Kladruby stud farm is one of the oldest in the world; it is home to the oldest native Czech horse breed, the Old Kladruber. Here, the history of horses and the cultural landscape come together.

Kladruby and Kunětická hora: Experience History

Visitors can walk through the Kladruby Polabí Protected Landscape Area. Those who would like to combine views of the landscape with a specific route can follow a red-marked hiking trail from Přelouč to Kladruby nad Labem. It passes Slavíkovy ostrovy and the Semín Aqueduct. These are individual points of interest along the way; the route can thus be identified by its named locations and structures.

Kunětická hora offers a different cultural and historical highlight. The hill is a national cultural monument with a remarkable medieval fortification system. Open-air theatre, concerts, festivals and themed historical programmes are also held there. Individual events vary by season; if you plan to attend a particular event, check the dates in advance. A yellow-marked hiking trail leads from Stéblová to Kunětická hora, near the Baroch Nature Reserve.

Nature Reserves and Wildlife Watching

Bohdanečský rybník is designated a national nature reserve. Aquatic, wetland and forest ecosystems around the pond are protected. These include fen meadows, reed beds, alder carr, willow stands and oak forests. Within the protected area, you may walk only on marked paths; the birdwatching site on the Polákov Peninsula is accessible without restriction. Check the current access guidance before your visit.

Baroch is an ornithological site where visitors can encounter common and rare bird species. It also has a grazing reserve where encounters with buffalo and wild horses are possible. The combination of birdwatching and large grazing animals gives this natural area a different focus from the wetland and forest habitats around Bohdanečský rybník.

For a stroll, Lázeňský Park in Lázně Bohdaneč offers well-maintained paths, benches and lawns for walking and relaxing. The Opatovice Canal offers a different kind of leisure activity: it is considered suitable for less demanding boating.

Pardubice: Castle, Rivers and a Gingerbread Tradition

Pardubice lies at the confluence of the Elbe and Chrudimka rivers. The Renaissance castle houses the East Bohemian Museum and a gallery; surviving remains of the castle can still be seen. The city also has a long culinary tradition: gingerbread making in Pardubice dates back to the 16th century.

Near Kunětická hora is Perníková chaloupka, with a gingerbread museum and fairytale attractions. If you are planning a visit, check access and reservation requirements in advance. This lets you combine the gingerbread tradition with a specific excursion destination without implying a particular itinerary between the two places.
