An arched bridge over the Opatovický Canal is a historic structure in Staré Ždánice. Other highlights include the early Gothic St. Wenceslas Church, a small museum and the traditional Staročeské Máje festival. These offer different themes for a stay: architectural history, local customs and cycling. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether a particular festival date, historic structures or a cycling route is the deciding factor.
The Canal and Local History
The Opatovický Canal is an important early Renaissance engineering work. The Pernštejn family built it between 1498 and 1514 to power mills, hammer mills and fulling mills. It connects the Elbe between Opatovice and Semín. In Staré Ždánice, it passes through the village and is a surviving testament to the former Pernštejn fishpond system. The canal thus bears witness both to the history of water engineering and to the former fishpond system.
The arched bridge over the canal is also a historic structure in Staré Ždánice. It provides a tangible connection to the canal’s local history, without requiring any particular itinerary.
Church, Zámeček and Museum
St. Wenceslas Church is early Gothic and was built in 1339, replacing an earlier Romanesque wooden church. Its single-nave layout forms the main space; the chancel is square and has a groin vault. A massive prismatic tower with battlements and a stone pyramid-shaped spire stands on the north side of the chancel. These architectural features give the church a clearly described layout: the nave, chancel and tower can be considered as distinct elements.
The Zámeček Staré Ždánice was transformed into a romantic-style manor house by Baron Nathaniel Filip de Aras. Visits are possible during regular cultural events and guided tours; dates may change. If the building is part of your itinerary, check in advance when one of these visiting opportunities is available.
A small museum dedicated to Žilka’s life and legacy is now housed in the former municipal office, built by Žilka in the 1930s. It displays historical photographs, documents such as a marriage certificate or military ID, and other artefacts from his life. The museum adds a biographical perspective to the architectural history of the church and canal.
Staročeské Máje and Cycling Routes
The traditional Staročeské Máje festival is always held on the last Saturday in May, starting at 1 p.m. The festivities include a procession of young men in folk costumes accompanied by live music, followed by the Staročeská beseda dance beneath the main maypole. Since 2010, the Máje festival has been organized entirely by young people from Staré Ždánice. If the festival is the reason for your trip, you can plan your stay around the last Saturday in May and the 1 p.m. start.
Two cycling routes are relevant to cyclists. Cycle Route 4040 connects Čeperka, Staré Ždánice and Lázně Bohdaneč. The KČT Cycle Route 4200 starts in Staré Ždánice on Route 4040 and leaves the village on a paved road towards Osice. The first route connects several places; the second starts here and has a specified direction of travel. Check the status of Route 4040 before setting out; the waymarkers on Route 4200 may change.
When looking for an apartment in Staré Ždánice, the purpose of your trip can be an initial selection criterion: the date of the Máje festival, architectural history or a cycling trip. If a visit to the Zámeček is important to your plans, take the dates of cultural events and guided tours into account.
