Chvojenec brings together a range of reasons to visit: the history of a water fortress, a chapel featuring local woodcarving, and the Žernov Nature Reserve. There are also marked cycling routes, rest areas and sports facilities. When choosing your accommodation, you can consider whether you would like to focus mainly on culture, nature or physical activity.
Water Fortress and the History of the Route
The water fortress in Chvojenec was first mentioned in 1336. It was built during the royal colonisation to protect the route from Hradec Králové to Vysoké Mýto. Its defences included three moats and a rampart. The site’s history thus brings together two aspects: its fortifications and the importance of the protected route. Those interested in the area’s past can gain a concrete insight into the relationship between fortifications and travel in the region at that time.
A Chapel Featuring Local Woodcarving
A different, more recent cultural landmark is the Chapel of Saint Agnes of Bohemia, which was ceremonially opened on 28 September 2019. Its windows depict Saint Agnes of Bohemia and Saint Wenceslas. Local woodcarver Radek Kreizl made the altar and the cross. The window images and woodwork give the chapel its own artistic character. Together with the water fortress, it represents a different period: here, religious art and craftsmanship take centre stage, while the fortress reflects the historic defence of a route.
Žernov Nature Reserve and Ponds
The Žernov Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral area of Chvojenec. An oak-hornbeam forest grows on the slopes of Žernov Hill, while the Mordýř and Šmatlán ponds lie at its foot. The area around the ponds is characterised by natural wetland and forest vegetation. The landscape therefore offers a variety of features: woodland on the slopes and pond areas characterised by wetland and forest vegetation. The protected area was established by Regulation 3/2015 of the Pardubický kraj Region. It came into force on 1 July 2015 and remains in force.
Cycling, Sports and Events
Two marked cycling routes pass directly through Chvojenec. Cycle Route 4120 runs from Opatovice nad Labem to Dašice, while Cycle Route 4236 runs from Vysoké Chvojno to Dolní Ředice. Their endpoints differ, so when planning a ride, you can first check which route suits your plans. Before a longer ride, it is advisable to check the route markings. Cyclists can also use two rest areas in Chvojenec, with seating and an information board.
The multi-purpose sports court is free to use, but must be booked in advance. It can be booked for tennis, nohejbal, volleyball or basketball. If you plan to use the court, check the booking procedure and conditions of use beforehand.
A 2025 municipal bulletin lists the children’s carnival, Setkání s Mikulášem and Čarodějnice as regular traditional events. If one of these events is important to your trip, check the specific dates in advance. This way, you can weigh up cultural interests, nature and a possible cycling trip separately when planning, without trying to fit every activity into a single day’s itinerary.
