St. Nicholas Church gives Veliny a cultural and historical character. Two different descriptions can help you choose a route: an educational trail through almost all of Veliny and a 4.5-kilometre cycle path connecting Veliny with Borohrádek. This lets you plan around both your cultural interests and the type of route, without combining the two paths into a single route.

St. Nicholas Church: Wooden Construction and Current Use

St. Nicholas Church was built in 1752 as a wooden log church with a shingle roof. Among its distinctive historical details is a so-called Josephine coffin, dating to around the 1780s, located in the sacristy. The approximate date applies to this object; it should not be confused with the year the church was built.

The complex also includes a wooden mortuary built into the cemetery enclosure. The church, sacristy and mortuary thus offer several specific points of interest for a cultural and historical visit. Today, the church also serves as a cultural and social centre alongside its original purpose.

From spring to autumn, visitors can look into the church through an ornate wrought-iron grille. Keep this seasonal option in mind when planning your visit, and check the arrangements beforehand. The municipality lists the tourist stamp for St. Nicholas Church as number 1396.

Paths in and around Veliny

The Knight Velinga Educational Trail passes through almost all of Veliny, but it does not form a closed loop. This distinction matters when planning: the trail cannot be treated as a circular route. On the western side of Veliny, it leads into the forest to the remains of a former fortress. The historical description is important here: these are the remains of a former structure.

Scattered along the educational trail are a few play and learning features. Part of the Veliny–Borohrádek cycle path is also part of the Knight Velinga Educational Trail. The two routes therefore overlap in places, but they have different descriptions and can be distinguished when finding your way.

The Veliny–Borohrádek cycle path is 4.5 kilometres long and connects the two named places. It is suitable for cyclists, pedestrians and inline skaters. This is a specific alternative to the educational trail’s route through the village: for the trail, the key points are that it passes through almost all of Veliny and is not a loop; for the cycle path, they are its length and its connection to Borohrádek.

Visitor Information and Accommodation

At the “U čtyř pánů” rest area, there is a wooden shelter with seating. It is a clearly identified practical stop for visitors. The municipality also sells a tourist stamp for St. Nicholas Church, number 1396.

Near Veliny, Tábor Mlýnek is located in a quiet woodland setting; it is a complex of cabins. If you are considering this specific accommodation option, check its availability before travelling. This lets you combine accommodation planning with your cultural and route-related interests without equating the cabin complex with a hotel.
