Ostřetín can be explored through its high points and the history of its buildings and memorial sites. Na Hradcích and Vinice give the landscape two clearly named points of reference; the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and the events of 1758 add to the picture of local history. When looking for a holiday apartment, this range of attractions can help you choose the focus of your stay: are you more interested in architectural and military history, the views from Vinice, or the history of leisure at Javůrka?

High points and views

Na Hradcích reaches 335 m above sea level and is the highest point in the Pardubice District; the hill lies within the cadastral area of Ostřetín. At 329 m, Vinice is the second-highest point in the cadastral area of Ostřetín. The rankings refer to different areas: Na Hradcích is ranked at the level of the Pardubice District, while Vinice is ranked within the cadastral area of Ostřetín. In clear weather, Vinice offers views across a large part of eastern Bohemia. This combines a specific elevation with a view whose extent depends on the weather.

Church: first mention, new construction and monument status

The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is first mentioned in 1350 under the name Hostětín. This early mention of a name should be distinguished from the history of the present building: the former wooden church burned down in 1758, and the present church was built in 1781. On 30 December 1987, it was entered in the state register of cultural monuments. The dates therefore mark different chapters: the early mention under another name, the loss of the wooden church, the construction of the present church and, later, its registration as a cultural monument.

Battle history and remembrance

A two-day battle between Austrian and Prussian troops took place on Chmelnice Hill on 12 and 13 July 1758. The monument “Pomník Obětem Sedmileté války” stands in Ostřetín, between Ostřetín and Horní Roveň. A nature trail with five information panels about the battle also runs around Ostřetín. If you plan to visit the panels, check their condition on site. The clearly dated battle, a named monument and the panels thus offer distinct points of connection to local military history.

Spring and spa history at Javůrka

Below the marl slope of Javůrka lies a well fed by a plentiful spring. Baths were established at the spring near Javůrka. Around 1900, they were renovated and expanded; afterwards, they became a destination for day trips for residents of Holice and Ostřetín. Here, a specific landscape feature meets the history of a former leisure use. The sequence of the spring, the establishment of the baths and their later role as a day-trip destination gives this part of local history its own focus.
