In Lipoltice, architectural history, geology and recurring annual events offer different reasons to visit. The early Gothic Church of St. Matthew (Kostel sv. Matouše) gives the village a historical focus; two geological names draw attention to different rock features. When planning, you can first decide whether architecture, rocks or a particular festival will be the main reason for your stay.

Church and Fortress

The oldest building structure in Lipoltice is the early Gothic Church of St. Matthew (Kostel sv. Matouše), built around 1280. The church complex is enclosed by the oval wall of a former cemetery. It lies south of the village centre on a gentle slope that descends to the north and west; the complex can be accessed through a gate on its western side. This provides several ways to orient yourself: the construction date places the church in time, while the enclosure, hillside location and western gate describe the complex’s position.

Lipoltice Fortress has its own chronology: it is recorded as existing in 1509 and described as abandoned in 1544. These two dates mark a change in its historical status and add another historical point of reference to the village.

Geology in Lipoltice

When exploring the geological sites, it helps to distinguish between their names. Lipoltická skála is an outcrop of quartzite rising above the surrounding shales; it lies near Lipoltice at an elevation of 298 m above sea level. The geological site “Lipoltice – Cambrian” is Geotope No. 10 of the Železné hory National Geopark. Exposed there are alternating layers of grey quartz sandstone and grey to grey-black chlorite-sericite schist containing graphite. The word “Cambrian” in the site’s name identifies its geological period.

The two names refer to different geological features: Lipoltická skála is a protruding quartz formation, while the “Lipoltice – Cambrian” site features exposed rock layers and their colours. For a geology-focused visit, you can choose between a landform and an outcrop with different rock types.

Annual Events

Recurring annual events in Lipoltice include balls, carnival, the Witches’ Bonfire, Children’s Day and the lighting of the Christmas tree. If a particular event is the main reason for your trip, check the date for the year you plan to visit in advance.

Planning Your Stay

Access information also differs: a gate on the western side leads to the church complex; the geotope is freely accessible and can be reached by car to within 250 m. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Lipoltice, the reason for your trip can be your first filter. Start by deciding whether your focus is architectural history, geology or a particular festival.
