At an elevation of 219 metres, Vlčí Habřina lies in a small valley surrounded by forests to the north and south. The extensive Sopřečský rybník lies west of the village; Vlčí Habřina is also home to the forest pond Černý Nadýmač. Another distinctive feature is the “Vlčí jámy”, historic remains of wolf enclosures. There is also a local dumpling tradition dating back to 1994. This combination makes it easy to choose the focus of your trip: you can put the landscape, local history, cycling or food culture first.

Landscape and bodies of water

Sopřečský rybník lies west of Vlčí Habřina and is extensive. Černý Nadýmač, by contrast, is a forest pond in Vlčí Habřina, with reed beds and alder groves; it is home to rare flora and many species of waterbirds. The two landscape features therefore differ not only in location: the size of Sopřečský rybník stands out, while Černý Nadýmač is notable for its combination of a forest pond, plant life and waterbirds. The small valley at an elevation of 219 metres and the forests to the north and south also give the village a clear landscape setting. If nature is your main interest, you can explore the area through its valley setting and forests as well as its two bodies of water, each with its own distinct character.

Traces of the wolf enclosures

The “Vlčí jámy” are remains of wolf enclosures dating from the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. The first pit is almost three metres deep and ten metres in diameter; the second is larger and has a circumference of 50 paces. The Obora forest south of Vlčí Habřina recalls a former wolf enclosure in its name. The village’s history is thus encountered in two forms: in the remains of the wolf pits and in the memory preserved in the forest’s name.

Cycling through Vlčí Habřina

For cyclists, Route 4272 is a specific point of reference: sections 3, 4 and 5 pass through Vlčí Habřina and continue from there towards Vápno. The route uses existing paved and unpaved roads and is marked with the appropriate traffic signs. Sections 3 to 5 locate the passage through the village within the route. Bear in mind when planning that it uses both types of road.

Dumpling tradition and local shopping

At Knedlíky Kadavý, the tradition of making traditional Czech dumplings in Vlčí Habřina dates back to 1994. The dumplings are worked by hand from the start of the production process, and the products are cooked in water using traditional methods. Freshly cooked dumplings and other products can be bought at the business premises. The culinary connection therefore extends from the production method to the option of buying products at the premises. If you plan to shop there, check the business details before your visit.
