A nature trail around the entire pond, a designated wheelchair route and distinctive habitats make nature a tangible theme in Břehy. There are also canals connected to a historic network, a hydroelectric plant that is still operational, and a memorial to the victims of two world wars. When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether pond paths and nature or water management and local history better match your interests.
Pond paths with different profiles
The nature trail around Buňkov Pond was created in 2015 and leads around the entire body of water. It can also be cycled, although walking is more suitable. The KČT route to Černý Nadýmač starts in Břehy and is listed in the current KČT list of wheelchair routes as a red, seven-kilometre wheelchair route.
At Buňkov, the focus is on the complete circuit and a recommendation for how to travel it. For the KČT route, the starting point, marking colour, length and classification are specified. This lets you compare a circuit around a pond with a designated route starting in Břehy, without treating the two paths as the same.
Habitats at Černý Nadýmač
Černý Nadýmač is an important site for the fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina); a historical account reports a population of several thousand animals there. The pond is bordered by wet alder forests and wet acidophilous oak forests. The area is also home, on exposed pond beds, to the critically endangered plant species Coleanthus subtilis.
If you are interested in plants, the mention of exposed pond beds is particularly precise. For a closer look at the animal life, the fire-bellied toad and its reported population offer a specific point of interest; the neighbouring forest types add further habitats to these nature themes.
Water management and local history
The Sopřečský water canal is part of the Opatovice Canal water network. The latter was completed by Vilém z Pernštejna in 1513. The focus here is therefore both on how a canal fits into a network and on a specific historical completion year.
A hydroelectric plant was installed at Výrovský Mill in 1914 and is still operational today. The restored Výrovský Mill serves as a cultural, sports and social centre for Břehy; restoration work is continuing in stages. Here, technical history meets the mill’s present-day role in community life.
The memorial to the victims of the First and Second World Wars in Břehy was unveiled on 17 October 1920 and still stands by Březinka. A route description updated in 2021 mentions a car park in the Výrov part of Břehy, between a restaurant and an industrial mill. From there, trips to Černý Nadýmač Pond can begin. If you plan to use this starting point, check the latest information before your visit.
