Srnojedy offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: a water engineering structure with a fish pass, weir, lock chamber and boat passage; a cycle route to the town centre; and cycling trips along the Elbe and walks in the surrounding area. The town’s history adds an early written mention and a historic ferry service to these themes. You can therefore shape your visit around your interest in water engineering, outdoor activities or history.

Water Engineering Structure and River

The water engineering structure comprises a movable weir, a small hydroelectric power station, a lock chamber and a boat passage. The fish pass is located in the lock chamber’s left dividing wall. It is 1.2 m wide and 41.1 m long, is of the technical pool-pass type, and enables fish migration. These measurements describe the fish pass itself, not the entire lock chamber.

The original weir was built between 1932 and 1942. It maintains the water level in the impounded section at 212.99 m above sea level, creating suitable conditions for inland navigation. This figure refers to the water level in the impounded section, not the elevation of the town. Together with the fish pass, the water engineering structure illustrates two different functions: regulating the water level for navigation and enabling fish migration.

On one side, the Elbe forms the cadastral boundary of Srnojedy. The river is also a reference point for cycling trips in the surrounding area and for the excursion boat Arnošt z Pardubic, which travels along the Elbe to Srnojedy.

Local History

In surviving written historical sources, Srnojedy is first mentioned in 1410. In this context, the landed gentleman Jan ze Srnojed, known as Tluch, appears as the first owner. The date marks the first written mention, not explicitly the founding of the town. There was also a hereditary ferry service called Košlan near the mill. The town’s history thus features a named individual and a named ferry service as two distinct historical details.

Cycling and Walking

The Svítkov–Srnojedy cycle route connects at the road bridge over the Elbe, the Rosický most. One section of the cycle route is 0.844 km long. The Pardubická Labská Cyklostezka now runs from Svítkov to the centre of Srnojedy. Both the bridge connection and the route to the town centre are therefore useful landmarks for cyclists.

Cycling trips along the Elbe are possible in the area around Srnojedy, and the surrounding area is also suitable for walks. For an outdoor-focused stay, cycling and walking offer different options.

Getting Around Srnojedy

Local public transport route 15 runs through Srnojedy. The excursion boat Arnošt z Pardubic also travels along the Elbe to Srnojedy. The route runs through the town, while the boat offers a trip on the river. Check timetables and the boat’s departure times before travelling; local public transport timetables may change.
