Sezemice Nad Loučnou combines striking architectural history with natural and recreational spaces along the Loučná. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up different interests here: church architecture and older residential buildings on the one hand, and parks, paths and protected nature on the other. This gives you a clear sense of whether culture or landscape should be the main focus of your stay.
Church and Architectural History
The Church of the Holy Trinity is one of the region’s oldest and most significant monuments. Its oldest brickwork dates from the first half of the 13th century. Sezemice’s octagonal bell tower is unique in Bohemia in both form and size. The masonry and tower make different impressions: one points to the early history of construction, while the other stands out for its distinctive architectural form.
A look at other buildings broadens this comparison across time. The oldest surviving residential building is House No. 92 on Husovo náměstí; its gable is designed in the 18th-century folk Baroque style. The cemetery chapel of the Virgin Mary was built in 1902 at the highest point in Sezemice. Together, these buildings trace a span from medieval masonry through folk Baroque to a chapel from the early 20th century.
The nearby Velký semínský akvadukt lies outside the central part of the town and was built in 1892 as part of the Pardubice pond system. Its connection with the pond system adds another historical theme to the architectural history of the church and residential buildings.
Park and Seasonal Attractions
Mlynářka Sports and Recreation Park is in the centre of Sezemice, between the Loučná and its millrace, Mlýnský potok. Its facilities include paved paths, benches and waste bins; public lighting is available in some areas. Outdoors, there is also a fitness and parkour area with a tartan surface.
A seasonal highlight is the natural ice rink: during frosty weather, it is set up in part of the park near the millrace and used by skaters of all ages.
Paths and Nature
Sezemice is a starting point for easy walks and bike rides along newly built paths and cycle routes. Check current trail conditions before planning specific outings. In 2014, tourist information boards were installed around the aqueduct, at the confluence of the Zadní Lodrantka and Loučná, along the cycle path beside the Loučná, and on the banks of the Loučná. When installed, the boards provided information about the surrounding nature, the history of the aqueduct and sights in the town.
Mlynářova louka, near the former mill, lies between the Loučná and the millrace and is considered a natural oasis of tranquillity. The Vesecký kopec natural monument offers a different perspective on nature: it is within the municipal area of Sezemice, near the village of Veská, at an elevation of 238 m above sea level. The area is considered the largest sand dune in the Czech Republic and is home to several protected beetle species. The natural features here are therefore quite distinct: Mlynářova louka represents a peaceful riverside landscape, while Vesecký kopec is defined by its status as a natural monument, its sand dune and its protected species.
