Hlavečník: Local History and Cultural Landscape

Hlavečník’s history dates back to the Middle Ages; at the same time, sandy fields, named forests, and protected landscape areas offer a glimpse of the surrounding area. A blue-marked hiking trail leads from here along the Černá strouha stream to Labské Chrčice. Hlavečník can thus be explored from several perspectives: as a place with its own history of names, as part of a larger cultural landscape, and as the starting point for a specifically named route.

Local History and Protected Areas

In 1228, Hlavečník was donated to Opatovice Monastery. The former name Hlávecko changed to Hlavečník in the 13th century. This brings together two medieval traces: the donation to the monastery and the change in the place name. The first is assigned to a specific year, the second to a century. The former name Hlávecko can be directly compared with the present-day name.

Another historical reference is a coin hoard found in Hlavečník. It was donated to the National Museum in Prague and exhibited there under the name of its finder.

The area of the Kladruby nad Labem National Cultural Monument, the National Stud Farm, also includes the cadastral area of Hlavečník. The protected Opatovice Canal has a section within the village’s cadastral area. Hlavečník is also part of the Kladrubské Polabí Protected Landscape Area. These designations cover different spatial scales: the canal is represented by a section within the cadastral area, while the other two cover the area of a cultural monument and a protected landscape area.

Fields, Forests, and the Regional Setting

The fields of Hlavečník are predominantly sandy. The forests around the village have specific names based on their location: Sokolí to the north, Splávy to the south, and Skřípěř to the east. The Písník hill provides another landmark in the local landscape: a road to Rasoch passes over it. The cardinal directions help distinguish the forest names, while the road adds a named landmark to this orientation.

In the wider region around Hlavečník lies the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Landscape for the Breeding and Training of Ceremonial Carriage Horses at Kladruby nad Labem.” This landscape includes a sandy floodplain, pastures, meadows, forests, fields, parks, paths, avenues, groups of trees, individual trees, and waterways. It is used for breeding and training Kladruber horses. As a regional setting, this cultural landscape complements the local features of fields, forests, and paths.

Routes with Different Points of Reference

For a route with a specific direction, the blue-marked hiking trail leads from Hlavečník along the Černá strouha stream to Labské Chrčice. Both the route along the waterway and its destination are specified. The “Po práci legrani – Hlavečník” excursion route passes through the village. You can distinguish between the two routes according to your planning needs: the blue trail emphasizes its course and destination, while the excursion route passes through Hlavečník. Before setting out on this excursion, check the current route conditions, as they may change.
