At the Muzeum perníku, traditional Old Bohemian gingerbread and a fairy-tale forest take centre stage. Another highlight is Kunětická hora Castle, with its castle history, views and walking opportunities. This gives you a clear choice when planning your visit: would you like to focus mainly on gingerbread craft and the fairy-tale world, or would you also like to explore cultural and nature themes around the castle?
Getting here and exploring on two wheels
If you travel by local bus, buses from Hradec Králové and Pardubice stop at “Ráby – Perníková chaloupka”, right by the Muzeum perníku. The stop is therefore directly next to one of the main visitor attractions. As routes and timetables can change, check the connection using a current timetable service before travelling.
Cycle route 4124 runs from Pardubice Cihelna via Staré Hradiště, Brozany, Ráby and Kunětická hora towards Opatovice nad Labem. Along this sequence of places, Ráby comes after Brozany and before Kunětická hora. The bus information names connections from two cities and a stop at the museum; the cycle route, by contrast, shows a sequence of places along the way. If you are planning to cycle, also check the local signposting before setting off.
Gingerbread craft and fairy tales
In the fairy-tale forest at the Muzeum perníku, visitors can playfully relive Jeníček and Mařenka’s journey to the gingerbread cottage. The Perníkářská dílna Ježibaby offers a different focus: there, you can watch traditional Old Bohemian gingerbread being made with carved wooden moulds. One experience brings the fairy tale to life; the other focuses on the craft. The workshop is announced as open on specific dates, so plan your visit around the published dates.
Castle, building history and landscape
At Kunětická hora Castle, a tour takes you through the historic castle palace and up to a viewing tower. An exhibition is dedicated to the architect Dušan Jurkovič, who played a major role in the castle’s restoration. The earlier building history can also be placed in context: between 1491 and 1548, the castle underwent extensive reconstruction under Vilém and his sons Vojtěch and Jan. The tour, exhibition and building history offer different ways to explore the same place. Check the latest visitor information about the tour and exhibition before your visit.
The castle grounds offer year-round walking opportunities through orchards and along woodland paths around the hill. Walking conditions may vary depending on the season. So, as well as visiting the historic building, you can choose to explore the surrounding landscape on foot.
The Kunětická hora natural monument has other natural features too: it is home to saproxylic insects, particularly the hermit beetle, as well as mammals and birds associated with old hollow trees. The rocky habitats, dry grasslands and old orchards are also home to specially protected animal and plant species. These habitats offer a different perspective on nature than a walk alone.
The options differ considerably in terms of timing: the workshop is open on announced dates, while walks on the castle hill are possible year-round, although the season can affect walking conditions. If gingerbread craft is your main interest, check the workshop dates first; if you want to focus on the landscape, take into account the conditions for your planned walk.
