Visitors choosing Zdechovice for a stay will find several ways to explore the town’s history and surroundings: a church in Baroque style, marked hiking trails, memorial sites in the forests and the castle park. The municipality is considered a gateway to the Železné hory. When planning your visit, you can therefore focus on different aspects, from the town’s history to trails through gently rolling countryside.

Marked trails for walking and cycling

The Svatojakubská cesta reaches Zdechovice from Kladruby nad Labem along a blue-marked hiking trail. From the Obří postele signpost, it continues along a green-marked trail towards Záboří nad Labem. Check the markings before setting out.

Another described route follows a blue-marked trail from Řečany nad Labem to Zdechovice. There is a signpost on the village square, beside the memorial to the fallen.

The terrain is gently rolling. As a result, the hiking trails in Zdechovice can generally also be used as cycling routes, with only minor exceptions. If you are planning a route on foot or by bike, check the specific route against the current markings; signs and conditions on individual trails may change.

The church and the history of the trails

The church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul still stands today. It acquired its present form after a Baroque renovation in 1716. The church provides a tangible point of reference if you would like to explore the town’s architectural history during your visit.

The Trstenická stezka tells the story of a different period: this historic route passed through Zdechovice, where it split into routes towards Sázava and Prague. Unlike the blue- and green-marked trails described today, this route is part of the town’s history. There is also historical evidence of iron mining in Zdechovice. Local history thus encompasses both routes through the town and traces of past activities.

Castle park, forest memorial sites and a pond

The castle park in Zdechovice underwent extensive revitalisation in 2015. The castle originally included a plot with a park, a fallow deer enclosure and two ponds.

Memorial sites in the forests of Zdechovice include Petrova šlápota and Obří postele. In the surroundings of Zdechovice, Obří postele is also a natural rock formation made of pebbles, whose shape resembles large beds. The landscape here is framed both by the memorial sites and by this unusually named natural formation.

Only sport fishing is permitted at Pilský Pond, which covers an area of 7 ha. If you plan to fish here, check the required permits and operating arrangements in advance.

Planning your visit

A local information centre has been operating at the Zdechovice municipal office since 1 January 2008. The markings and signposts mentioned above can help you plan a specific route; check the signs before setting out. This makes it easy to plan your stay around your interests, whether they are local history, marked trails or the area’s landscape features.
