In the Parque Natural de la Sierra y Cañones de Guara, the natural park covers 47,453 hectares, while its peripheral protection zone covers a further 33,286 hectares. Elevations range from 430 to 2,077 metres. To compare it with other natural areas, it is worth considering the two areas separately: the additional figure refers to the peripheral protection zone, not to another part of the natural park. The elevation figure, in turn, describes a different dimension of the area.
The Parque Nacional de Ordesa y Monte Perdido offers another perspective. The national park covers 15,696 hectares and is located in the province of Huesca, where there are more than 1,500 species of Pyrenean flora. The UNESCO Global Geopark Sobrarbe-Pirineos, meanwhile, covers the entire Sobrarbe region in the north of the province of Huesca and offers more than 1,000 kilometres of well-maintained hiking trails. When choosing a nature theme, several different perspectives are available: Guara’s range of elevations and area, the flora of the national park, and the geopark’s network of trails.
Rock Art and Routes along the RĂo Vero
At the Parque Cultural del RĂo Vero, prehistoric art goes hand in hand with practical visitor information. Within a relatively small area, the park brings together artistic styles ranging from the Palaeolithic to Levantine and schematic art. Guided visits take you to the Abrigo de Arpán, the rock shelters of Mallata and Barfaluy, and the Abrigo de Lecina Superior. If you are interested in specific sites, these guided visits offer a different way to explore them than the park’s themed routes.
For hiking and mountain biking, there are signposted themed routes with directional and information signs, viewpoints and rest areas. The offer therefore includes both guided visits to named rock shelters and marked trails with information along the way. The different artistic styles provide an overview across time: the Palaeolithic, Levantine art and schematic art are represented side by side within a small area. You can focus your visit on art history, the destinations on the guided visits or the themed trails.
Historic Sites and Practical Information
The Frente de los Monegros route is Aragón’s first route dedicated to democratic memory. Along it, you can explore trenches, casemates, bunkers and parapets mentioned by Orwell in his work “Homage to Catalonia.” The route thus combines the exploration of these military remains with their connection to Orwell’s text. The Ruta Orwell also provides a specific point of reference: a path to the Monte Irazo position starts at kilometre 34.6 on the A-129 between Leciñena and Alcubierre. Check road conditions before setting out.
La Cartuja de las Fuentes is open to the public on Saturdays, Sundays and national public holidays; guided visits are available. The complex is also being restored. As opening hours may change, check the latest visiting times before you go. The Descenso de Nabatas por el RĂo Cinca offers a different kind of timing: it takes place every year on the penultimate Sunday in May. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the event date for the relevant year.
The discoveries you want to shape your trip can be chosen according to concrete differences: natural areas with different measures, prehistoric art at named visitor sites, signposted routes or places with historical connections.
