Las Almunias can be explored through several different themes: buildings with clearly identifiable architectural details, a circular route for walkers and cyclists, and summer stargazing. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these themes separate: the route is a circular route, the descent through La Peonera is a canyoning activity, and the stargazing takes place at night. This way, you can decide which focus suits your stay, rather than treating everything as one single programme.

Landscape and Buildings

Between the settlement and the banks of the Alcandre River lie former fields and orchards. This describes a landscape between the village and the river, distinct from the architectural details in the village. If you are interested in the history of the buildings, there are several specific points of reference: the parish church of Las Almunias is dedicated to Santa MarĂa Obispo and dates from the 17th century.

At Casa Cáncer, the coat of arms and the portal with wedge-shaped stones catch the eye. The keystone bears the inscription “DOMINGO BIBAN AÑO 1761”; the date is part of the inscription. The Ermita de la Trinidad offers a different architectural accent: it is a simple, vernacular building from the 18th century. The church, portal and hermitage can thus be considered through their respective features, without reducing them to the same architectural style or period.

Circular Route, Canyon and Night Sky

The Crestas del Balced route is a circular route for hiking and cycling, starting in Las Almunias de Rodellar. Its marked starting point is on the left-hand side of the road towards Bierge, about 200 metres from Las Almunias. This information helps you find the start; the route itself is designated for both hiking and cycling. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

There is also a starting point near Las Almunias for the descent through the La Peonera canyon. This descent is a different type of activity from the Crestas del Balced circular route. Plan it as a separate excursion and check the relevant conditions and regulations, which may change. This keeps the two options distinct, without assuming they are connected or share a section of the route.

Every summer, the AgrupaciĂłn AstronĂłmica de Huesca organises night-time stargazing in Las Almunias de Rodellar. The sky is viewed with the naked eye and through telescopes; there is also an opportunity to observe the moon. The event takes place at night, while the route and canyon descent offer different activities. If you would like to include the stargazing in your stay, check the dates for the summer in question.

Cheese and a Visit to Quesos de Guara

Quesos de Guara is a family-run food business in Las Almunias. It makes products from its own Casa Escartin estate, which is located in the Sierra de Guara Natural Park. The business produces artisan speciality cheeses from sheep’s and goat’s milk. Alongside the buildings and activities, this local food business offers another point of interest during your trip.

Visitors can tour the cheese dairy, learn about how the cheeses are made, or enjoy a tasting in nature. If you are planning a visit or tasting, arrange a time with the business in advance.
