Hecho’s well-preserved historic center showcases distinctive traditional architecture. Other highlights include the history of the parish church of San MartĂn’s reconstruction, two museums, and themes related to hiking and birdwatching. The Navatas Festival is also worth factoring into your plans: it takes place in the first days of May, provided conditions on the AragĂłn Subordán allow it.
Townscape, Church and Museums
The parish church of San MartĂn de Hecho was rebuilt between 1829 and 1833 after the original church building was damaged during the Peninsular War. The damage was followed by a reconstruction that took several years. The church offers a specific historical point of reference, while the very well-preserved historic center showcases traditional architecture on a broader scale.
The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo al Aire Libre de Hecho grew out of the International Symposium of Sculpture and Art, which was held in Hecho from 1975 to 1984. Casa Mazo offers a different focus: this ethnological museum displays tools used in farming and livestock raising, as well as in making cheese, requesón (a fresh cheese), and bread. The fields of work represented give the museum a focus on everyday history, while the open-air museum originated in a symposium of sculpture and art.
A Structure on the Aragón Subordán
The Puente de la Torre crosses the Aragón Subordán about one kilometer downstream from Hecho. It is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest) and classified as a monument. Alongside its location by the river, its protected cultural status and classification as a monument are therefore established. It is a separate point of cultural and historical interest outside the town center.
Birdwatching and Megalithism
Hecho is part of a Special Protection Area (ZEPA) for birds. As part of the Birding Pirineos project, two routes and an ornithological observatory were established there. For travelers interested in birdwatching, this offers different ways to explore: trails and an observatory. These offerings, together with the designated bird protection area, make birdwatching a distinct part of trip planning.
The Centro de InterpretaciĂłn del Megalitismo Pirenaico is eight kilometers from Hecho, on the road to Selva de Oza. As of August 27, 2026, the center was temporarily closed. Check its visitor status before including it in your plans.
Hiking and the Navatas Festival
The official GR 15 route, Stage 12 from Aragüés del Puerto to Ansó, reaches the entrance to Hecho. If you plan to hike it, it is advisable to check the latest route information before setting out.
The Navatas descent organized by the Asociación de Navateros de la Val d’Hecho has grown into a festival held in the first days of May, provided conditions on the Aragón Subordán allow it. Early May is therefore the time window, while river conditions remain the deciding factor. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check in advance whether it can go ahead.
Accommodation and Information
Hecho’s tourist office is located in the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, in the Pallar d'Agustin. It provides information about hiking routes and accommodation. If you are looking for accommodation in Hecho, this local source of information can help with your plans, particularly if you want to take a hiking route as well as explore the townscape into account.
