Adahuesca lies between the valleys of the Vero and Alcanadre rivers. Its compact center features traditional architecture, with round-arched portals repeated across the facades. There are also religious buildings, stories and views of the Sierra de Sevil. To help plan your visit, its highlights can be grouped by theme: the village and its history, religious traditions, routes through the landscape, and local cheese tastings. You can focus your discoveries on what interests you, without having to experience culture and nature in the same way.
The Village Center, Church and Legends
The parish church of San Pedro was built in the 18th century in the Classical Baroque style. Another architectural feature is its Esconjuradero, located above the sacristy and integrated into the church. Rituals intended to ward off hailstorms were held there. This reflects a historical purpose of the building, not a present-day use.
The Center for Legends and Traditions is located on the site of the former parish church and a castle built around 1055; remains of the castle are still visible. The exhibition covers old stories and legends, fantastic beings, beliefs and rites. Panels, photographs, display cases and audiovisual media present the themes in different ways. The center offers guided tours of its exhibition. Those especially interested in orally transmitted stories and local beliefs will find a different way to explore Adahuesca’s culture here than by looking at its architecture.
The Leyendas al paso route is also part of this theme: it passes eleven information panels along the trails. This adds stops along the route to the exhibition at the center. The two formats differ mainly in whether you encounter the stories on a guided tour of the center or through the panels as you walk.
Religious Buildings and Feast Days
The chapel of Saints Nunilo and Alodia is considered one of the most elaborately decorated Baroque interiors in the churches of the comarca. Another building with its own distinctive character is the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Treviño. It is classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest and includes a temple of Romanesque origin with a cloister. The complex is a remnant of a former 13th-century monastery; traces of the former cloister can still be made out from the outside.
Adahuesca’s main feast days honor Saints Nunilo and Alodia and take place from August 24 to 28. Individual events may vary, so it is worth checking the dates and program if you would like to plan your trip around the festivities. A celebration is also held on May 20 at the boundary between Adahuesca, Abiego and Alberuela de la Liena, at the Cabañera from Broto to Mequinenza. It includes prayers, a ritual at a stone cairn, and the distribution of blessed flatbread and Paneticos.
Trails, Views and Geological History
The Mirador de San Pedro offers panoramic views of the Sierra de Sevil, which lies within the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park. The routes through the landscape each offer something different. Paisaje mediterráneo near Adahuesca combines ochre-colored agricultural areas with paths through evergreen oak groves and a rich variety of flowering plants. Pie de Sierra leads from the foothills near Adahuesca toward Alquézar. The route passes through holm oak forests and cereal fields, as well as Mediterranean groves of olives and almonds. The contrast is between the floral diversity and ochre-colored areas on one route, and forests, fields, and olive and almond groves on the other.
Loma de los “dineretes” de Sevil offers a different perspective on the history of the landscape. It is home to numerous fossils of the genus Nummulites from the Eocene. At that time, the area was covered by the sea. These fossils reveal a much older landscape history than the buildings and traditions in the village.
A Tasting to Complete Your Visit
Quesos de Radiquero offers tastings of its four main types of cheese on both unguided and guided visits. Availability depends on the cheese dairy’s operations, so it is best to arrange your visit in advance. This culinary highlight adds to your exploration of architecture, traditions and landscape without requiring you to follow a particular itinerary.
