The Castillo de Loarre stands at an altitude of 1,071 metres and offers views across the Hoya de Huesca. Inside the castle is the 11th-century Romanesque church of San Pedro. Its elevation and church architecture offer two specific points of interest for visitors interested in landscape and history.
Castle, churches and local history
Another church takes visitors to a later period: the Iglesia de San Esteban was built in the 18th century over a late Gothic building dating from the 16th century. Its architectural history thus ranges from the Romanesque San Pedro to a much later church.
Another architectural feature is the Fuente de tres caños, a 16th-century fountain built in Loarre from ashlar stone. Alongside the castle and churches, it adds a fountain with its own distinctive form and materials to the historic buildings.
The municipality’s history of education is another topic of interest. The former school in Linás de Marcuello, a separate village within the municipality of Loarre, is a museum space belonging to the Museo Pedagógico de Aragón. It presents rural schooling, teachers’ working conditions and the learning materials used by children. Visitors interested in everyday life and the history of education will find a different perspective here than at the castle and churches.
Trails with different focuses
Some GR 1 hiking trails start in Loarre. The PR Castillo de Loarre - Virgen de la Peña route is designated for mountain biking and hiking. The Camino del Santo Grial offers a different experience: this legendary route passes through dense forests on its way to the Castillo de Loarre. Check trail conditions before setting out.
Almond blossom offers another route option. The longer version of the Ruta de la flor del almendro passes through Ayerbe, Loscorrales and Loarre and is around 25 kilometres long. This distance refers to the longer version; the route links several named places with the seasonal theme of blossom.
Landscape and seasons
Depending on slope orientation and shaded areas, the Sierra de Loarre is home to trees including black pines, Scots pines, beech trees, firs and holly. Bearded vultures, griffon vultures and golden eagles can be seen in the municipality of Loarre. Almond blossom in early spring is highlighted as a special reason to visit. These nature-related features offer different points of interest: blossom adds a seasonal highlight, tree species vary with the slope, and birdwatching is possible within the municipality.
Mushrooms may be gathered in the Coto de Loarre with a permit. Seasonal rules may change; check the regulations in force before gathering mushrooms.
Stay in a historic building
The HospederĂa de Loarre is located in the former 16th-century town hall on the central square. The building now serves as a hospederĂa, linking its former municipal function with its present-day use as accommodation. The hospederĂa has a restaurant serving Aragonese cuisine, where tradition and innovation come together. Check whether the restaurant is open before your visit.
