Canfranc International Railway Station raises two distinct questions: How was a connection across the Pyrenees planned, and how is a building designated as cultural heritage? On March 6, 2002, the Government of Aragon designated the station a Cultural Heritage Site of Special Interest in the Monument category. It was part of a cross-border railway project intended to connect Spain and France via the Somport Tunnel.

The historic railway line from Canfranc to Jaca can also be explored through its specific structures and figures: it is 25 kilometers long and runs across the Cenarbe, or San Juan, Viaduct, through 21 tunnels and over nine metal sections. Canfranc’s video guide service is available in French, English and sign language. Available languages may change; check in advance if needed.

Architecture Through the Centuries

The Palacio de la Aljafería in Zaragoza is an 11th-century Islamic fortified palace, parts of whose fortifications have survived. Its rooms are arranged around an open-air courtyard. The complex can therefore be seen both in its exterior fortifications and in the layout of its interior spaces.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site “Mudéjar Architecture of Aragon” comprises ten religious and secular monuments in the provinces of Teruel and Zaragoza. In Teruel, the tower, roof structure and crossing tower of the Catedral de Santa María de Mediavilla are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. This makes it possible to distinguish clearly between the protected parts of the cathedral and the broader group of Mudéjar monuments.

Another comparison takes you through the architectural history of the Monasterio de San Juan de la Peña: it comprises the Romanesque Monasterio Viejo from the 10th century and the Baroque Monasterio Nuevo from the 17th century. Both buildings belong to the same monastery, but represent different periods and architectural styles. Fuendetodos also offers a personal connection to cultural history: it is the birthplace of Francisco de Goya (1746–1828).

Pyrenean Landscapes and Historic Parks

Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park comprises four main valleys: Añisclo, Escueta, Ordesa and Escuaín. Trails, signage and viewpoints have been provided for visitors to experience the landscape. The park administration may adjust this visitor infrastructure.

Two dates mark different aspects of the history of the Monasterio de Piedra. Following the discovery of the Iris Grotto in 1860, the park was opened to the public. Later, in 1940, the garden of the Monasterio de Piedra was designated a National Park of Outstanding Scenic Beauty. The first date therefore relates to the park’s historic public access, while the second relates to the garden’s designation.

Routes, Winter Sports and Wine

For winter sports, the figures for Astún-Candanchú and Formigal-Panticosa offer a useful comparison: Astún-Candanchú has more than 100 kilometers of ski runs, while Formigal-Panticosa has 180 kilometers. The latter extends across six valleys in the spectacular Pyrenean setting of the Tena Valley. Ski-run figures may be revised by the operators; if they are important to your plans, check the latest figures in advance.

The Senderos Turísticos de Aragón comprises more than 3,000 kilometers of routes through nature, culture and heritage. Aragón Slow Driving offers 16 unique routes spread throughout the region of Aragon. Route catalogs may be updated; if you plan to include a particular route in your itinerary, check the information in advance.

Wine is another regional highlight: Aragon has six wines with a protected designation of origin—Somontano, Calatayud, Cariñena, Campo de Borja, Aylés and Cava. Cava is regulated across multiple autonomous communities. The list of designations may be updated by the relevant authorities.
