Alquézar combines a medieval streetscape and a collegiate church with a location in the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park. This brings historic architecture and specific route options together with nature-related activities such as observing birds of prey.

Historic Streetscape and Collegiate Church

By Royal Decree of 26 February 1982, the town of Alquézar was designated a historic complex. Its historic streetscape preserves its medieval layout and cobbled streets. Covered passageways known as “callizos” are a characteristic feature of these streets. The historic character is therefore not defined by individual buildings alone: the layout, paving and covered passages are also among the town’s defining features.

The Collegiate Church of Alquézar originated as an Arab fortress founded in the 9th century by the Muslim military leader Jalaf ibn Rasid ibn Asad. The present-day church was built in the 16th century and dedicated to Santa María. The origins of the complex and the construction of the present-day church thus belong to different periods. The cloister also has a special distinction: it is the only one in Aragón to be completely preserved with its paintings.

Museo Casa Fabián

Museo Casa Fabián is housed in rooms in a 17th-century building. One of its features is an oil mill carved into the rock, which may date back to the Middle Ages. The museum also displays agricultural tools and household items associated with mowing, grape harvesting and olive picking. These are joined by objects related to working with plant fibres and to crafts. The museum thus complements the history of the buildings and church with subjects relating to everyday life and agricultural work.

Routes and Nature

Alquézar is located in the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park, at the foot of the Pyrenees in the province of Huesca. The starting points for two routes are clearly described in the town. The route to the rock art caves of Quizans and Chimiachas starts next to the municipal swimming pools, where there is an information board. The Pasarelas route, on the other hand, starts directly opposite the town hall, on Calle de la Iglesia. The two starting points can therefore be distinguished by their different landmarks.

The Pasarelas de Alquézar is a 3 km mountain route with a total elevation gain of 175 m. The route passes through the Río Vero gorge; allow around two hours for it. Its length, elevation gain and approximate duration give you different points of reference for planning your trip.

On the Ruta Mirador de Chimiachas, you have the opportunity to observe griffon vultures, bearded vultures, Egyptian vultures and peregrine falcons. This is a different focus from the route information for the Pasarelas: here, observing birds of prey is the main attraction. Climbing is permitted year-round in Sector 37; check the current information before climbing. The Balsas de Basacol are a great place to cool off.
