Aínsa’s old town was declared a historic-artistic site in 1965. Aínsa lies at the confluence of the Cinca and Ara rivers. This brings together two different points of reference: a historical designation and a specific location in the landscape. The town also has a castle and church, a Geopark Centre, arts and tradition events, and hiking routes. This gives you several themes to weigh up when planning your trip, rather than viewing the town through just one attraction.

Old Town, Castle and Architectural History

Aínsa Castle covers an extensive area, almost as large as the rest of the town. The Espacio del Geoparque de Sobrarbe-Pirineos is located in the southeast tower. The size comparison describes the castle grounds in relation to the rest of the town; the tower locates the centre within the castle complex.

The Church of Santa María is a Romanesque building constructed in the 12th century and inspired by Jaca Cathedral. Its construction period, architectural style and inspiration provide three different details about its architecture. Near the town centre stands the Cruz Cubierta, a memorial monument. It adds another cultural point of reference to the town’s architecture: commemoration.

Geology, Art and Tradition

The Geopark Centre presents geological insights across four rooms arranged one above the other. The rocks of Sobrarbe document more than 500 million years. This is a different timescale from the 12th-century construction of Santa María: here, the focus spans the history of the Earth, while there it is on a single building. The Geopark theme can therefore be seen as a wide-ranging complement to architectural history.

The cultural offerings also differ in form. The Centro de Arte Contemporáneo in Aínsa makes a carefully selected bibliography on international contemporary art available to the public. The focus is therefore on exploring contemporary art through a curated selection. By contrast, the La Morisma performance centres on community participation, involving more than 300 residents of Aínsa and the surrounding comarca.

Hikes with Different Highlights

One hiking route leads to viewpoints on Cerro de Cotón and also passes the 11th-century Torre de Tou. Another hiking route descends through the Río Ena, whose water is considered temperate. The hikes have different highlights: viewpoints and a historic building on one route, and a descent through a river on the other. The dates also offer a direct comparison for history enthusiasts: Torre de Tou dates to the 11th century, while Santa María dates to the 12th.

This question helps you choose a destination based on the themes you actually want to experience.
