Aragüés del Puerto can be discovered through its Pyrenean traditions and the trails through a mountain valley. For planning your trip, there are several themes to choose from: culture and local history, or hiking trails and landscapes. These range from Palotiau to routes with different starting points and landmarks.
Village Character and Cultural Identity
Houses dating from the 16th century predominate in the centre of Aragüés del Puerto. The bordas around the village traditionally served as livestock shelters and now accommodate tourists. This regional type of accommodation is also part of the area’s architectural and land-use history. Before booking, check the availability of the specific property.
Palotiau is a living local Pyrenean tradition and a marker of Aragüés del Puerto’s identity. It combines music played on the salterio and chiflo, stick dances and theatrical elements. If you are interested in cultural themes, this living practice complements the history of the houses and church.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario was rebuilt after a fire in 1610; the work was completed in 1704. The building is characterised by three naves separated by cruciform pillars. The altarpiece ensemble inside reflects the development of altarpiece art in the 18th century. The architecture and altarpieces thus offer two different ways to explore the church’s history.
Mountain Valley and Landscape
The Aragüés valley has a mountain climate with a strong Atlantic influence. Its landscape includes humid forests of beech, fir, pine and yew. The municipality lies within Los Valles Occidentales Natural Park. La Molina is a leisure and sports area of more than four hectares on the riverbank, adding another local point of interest to the area’s nature and landscapes.
Hiking Trails and Navigation
The GR 15 reaches Aragüés del Puerto after descending from Cuello Chilica along a broad, walled path. Another section of the GR 15 runs from Urdués, passing the Ermita de la Virgen de Catarecha before continuing to Aragüés. The descriptions refer to different landmarks: the first section focuses on the descent along the walled path, while the other follows the route past the Ermita. This allows you to distinguish the two sections by their respective route features.
The Puente de Labati–Refugio de Lizara S-7 route starts at Labati Bridge, at an altitude of 1105 m, on the road between Aragüés del Puerto and Lizara. The trail to Ibón de Estanés can also be reached from Lizara. The stated starting points differ: Labati Bridge is given for the S-7, while Lizara is given for the trail to Ibón de Estanés. Check current trail conditions before setting out; the S-7 markings may also vary.
