Lárrede brings together the tower of San Pedro Church, the architectural features of Casa Isábal and the GR 16, whose second stage passes through the village between Biescas and Yebra de Basa. Near the church, the Centro de Interpretación de las Iglesias de Serrablo is housed in the former village smithy. This makes Lárrede a place where architectural details, a regional ensemble of churches and a hiking trail offer different ways to shape a stay. Visitors can focus on culture, hiking or a combination of the two.

San Pedro and Casa Isábal: two architectural perspectives

The tower of San Pedro Church has a square ground plan, and its design is influenced by Arab minarets. These two features complement each other without describing the same thing: the ground plan identifies the shape, while the influence points to a design reference. San Pedro thus combines a clearly defined geometric form with a specific architectural inspiration.

Casa Isábal offers a different architectural feature with its L-shaped ground plan: a large rectangular main building is complemented by a smaller wing. Geometric pebble floors are found in the second-floor salon and the courtyard. In the same building, the overall layout and floor decoration can therefore be seen side by side in two clearly identified areas.

The churches of Serrablo in a wider context

The Centro de Interpretación de las Iglesias de Serrablo is located in the village’s former smithy, near San Pedro. Its permanent exhibition includes a map of the Ruta de las Iglesias de Serrablo, which covers around a dozen churches built on the left bank of the Río Gállego in the 10th and 11th centuries. This shifts the focus from an individual building to a group sharing a common historical and geographical setting. Admission to the centre is free. Check the centre’s visiting arrangements in advance.

Along the GR 16 through and south of Lárrede

The GR 16 also makes Lárrede an interesting stop on a hiking stage. Its second stage runs from Biescas to Yebra de Basa via Lárrede, with the village between Susín and Satué. On the climb to Lárrede, the route passes La Torraza before descending to the village. This places the section both within the stage and in relation to this named point on the ascent.

From Lárrede, the GR 16 continues south, crossing the road after a few metres and taking the path to Liena Caxicar and its impressive oak grove. The route description thus distinguishes the climb to the village from the continuation south: La Torraza lies on the ascent, while Liena Caxicar and the oak grove are further along the route. These are two specific landmarks along the GR 16 to consider when planning a hiking trip.

The valley and getting there

The Torre del Moro overlooks the Río Gállego valley, adding a landscape perspective to the architectural features of San Pedro and Casa Isábal. Signs to San Pedro Church direct visitors from the N-330 via the turnoff for Lárrede. This landmark adds to the choice between exploring the village’s cultural heritage and hiking the GR 16.
