The Citadel of Jaca and the Romanesque Cathedral of San Pedro provide two very different historical highlights. The town also has a military miniatures museum, a strong baking tradition and routes around the municipality. Jaca is also the most important town on this section of the French Way of St. James.

Citadel and Cathedral: Different Eras

The Citadel of Jaca is the only fully preserved fortress of its type in the world, a design developed in the 16th century. Its pentagonal layout has arrow-shaped bastions at all five corners, connected by a covered walkway. On 28 June 1951, the citadel was declared a historic-artistic monument; today, its protected status is known as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC).

The dates mark different historical periods: the fortress type was developed in the 16th century, while the first construction phase of the Cathedral of San Pedro had already begun in 1077. This followed the town charter granted by King Sancho RamĂrez, which made Jaca the capital of the Kingdom of Aragon. The first construction phase ended in 1139, during the reign of Alfonso I. The cathedral is considered one of the most important Romanesque buildings on the Iberian Peninsula. It was declared a National Monument on 3 June 1931 and has been protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) since 1985.

Museum and Military History

The Military Miniatures Museum is located in the Castillo de San Pedro, also known as the Citadel of Jaca. It displays more than 32,000 lead figures across 23 themed scenes. The educational space hosts miniature-making workshops, talks, film screenings, historical reenactment games and model-making competitions; the specific program may vary.

Another military-historical site is Fuerte de Rapitán. Built in the 19th century, the fort stands on the hill of the same name north of Jaca, at an altitude of 1,142 meters. It is partly set into the mountainside and is an example of an armed rifle fort. The Diocesan Museum of Jaca offers other practical amenities: it is wheelchair accessible and has adapted toilets, adapted counters or storage areas, and wheelchairs available.

Baking Traditions and Seasonal Cuisine

Jaca’s artisanal baking tradition includes Jaqueses, Condes, Lazos, Corazones, Patatas de Jaca and Coronitas de Santa Orosia. These specialties are available in the town’s pastry shops. Visitors who want to include regional food culture in their stay will find several distinctive pastry names that reflect the local tradition.

A seasonal highlight is the tapas and cazuelitas competition, held every October. More than 40 bars and restaurants prepare special dishes for the event. The exact dates may vary. The October event is thus distinct in timing from Jaca’s religious and cultural festival traditions.

Festivals and Routes around the Municipality

The festival held on the first Friday in May commemorates a medieval battle. The program includes tournaments, lance games, flag-waving and traditional Aragonese sports. On 25 June, the main day of the patron saint festival in honor of Santa Orosia is celebrated with a procession. Dancers perform traditional castanet dances, accompanied by the chiflo and salterĂo.

There are several paths and routes through villages and landscapes in the municipality of Jaca. They are designed for different types of walkers and each takes no more than two hours. The route from Jaca to Fuerte de Rapitán follows a paved road that climbs in hairpin bends. From the fort, there are sweeping panoramic views of Jaca and the entire Valle del Aragón.

The Valle de la Garcipollera also has a 4.8-kilometer accessible route with four accessible tourist information points. The route details provide different kinds of guidance: several routes around the municipality are listed as taking no more than two hours, while this route is specified by its length and information points.
