Loporzano brings together two questions to consider when planning a trip: Which buildings and places tell the story of the area, and which trails lead into the protected limestone landscape? The village is considered one of the starting points from which visitors can reach the Parque Natural de la Sierra y Cañones de Guara. If you’re looking for accommodation, first consider whether local history or excursions into the landscape will be the focus of your stay.
Limestone landscapes and nature around Guara
The nature park includes a protected limestone landscape with caves, shafts, springs, karren fields, sinkholes and poljes. These varied landforms give the landscape more depth than a single viewpoint: you can also explore the natural surroundings through their geological features. The Embalse de Vadiello occupies part of the gorge of the Guatizalema River at the foot of the Mallos de LigĂĽerri.
There are various activities to choose from in the Vadiello area. Hiking trails lead to the rock chapels of San Chinés and San Cosme and San Damián. One route forms a circular trail around the Vadiello area and the rock chapel of San Chinés, which lies beneath striking conglomerate walls. Climbing on the Mallos and caving in the surrounding caves round out the options. You can shape the nature-focused part of your trip around hiking, climbing or caving, without combining these activities into a single outing.
Churches, art and historic places
The Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Viñedo dates from the 18th century. Historically, it was the religious center of the area known as the Abadiado. The parish church of San Salvador in Loporzano also has a building history spanning several centuries: construction began at the end of the 16th century under Hernando AbadĂa, and it was significantly enlarged in the 18th century. El Amorcillo fountain in Loporzano, meanwhile, is a 19th-century work by the Parisian artist Durenne.
The village also features traditional manor houses typical of the foothills of the Sierra de Guara. Many bear the coats of arms of prominent local families. Peña de los Moros, also known as Peña Mora, in Santa Eulalia la Mayor within the municipality of Loporzano, offers another way to explore the area’s history: since its 2023 designation, the site has been protected as an Asset of Outstanding Cultural Interest (BIC) in the archaeological zone category. The Estrecho Quinto zone, shared between Siétamo and Loporzano, was a front-line area for a long time; it contains trenches, bunkers and caves.
The oil mill in Castilsabás preserves a spindle press with a central beam measuring twelve meters in length. An inscription on the beam bears the year 1886. A path just over 100 meters long connects the mill to the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Viñedo. This is a direct link between two cultural sites that you can include in your trip plans. The GalerĂa de Willi Frissen permanently displays works by the Belgian painter Willi Frissen.
Trails and practical planning
The routes differ in their destinations and courses. The Loporzano–Sasa del Abadiado route leads from Loporzano via Fuente Vieja to Sasa. Another route starts at the San Julián de Banzo car park, passes over the Collado de San Salvador and reaches the Ermita de San MartĂn de la Val de Onsera. A circular route goes from the Ermita de la Virgen del Viñedo via Loporzano to BandaliĂ©s and back to the ermita. A circular trail is also described at Vadiello. This gives you the choice of including a path to another place, a route to an ermita or a circular trail in your plans.
The Via Ferrata Canal del Palomo is near Santa Eulalia la Mayor. Access is via the wooded area beside the road to Vadiello; the return route leads from the top of the via ferrata through the Circo d’O Ciego. Check the latest access information before setting out. Avanza Bus provides public transport in Loporzano; check current timetables with the operator.
It’s also worth checking individual dates and visitor sites in advance. Loporzano’s main festival takes place on January 20 in honor of San Fabián and San Sebastián; check the dates before your trip. The hostel adjoining the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Viñedo houses the Punto de InformaciĂłn El Viñedo. If you’d like to visit this or the GalerĂa de Willi Frissen, check their respective opening hours in advance.
