Labuerda brings together sacred art, architectural history and the history of technology. The Museo de Ingenios Musicales focuses on historic sound recording and playback devices; churches and other buildings tell the story of different periods. There is also the route to the Ermita de San Visorio. If you enjoy discovering different sides of a place when you travel, Labuerda offers more than just one theme.
Music History and a Traditional Ice House
The Museo de Ingenios Musicales is located in Plaza Mayor and displays part of the Mur collection. Through historic devices, it traces the history of how sound was recorded and played back. This sets its focus apart from the town’s sacred collections and buildings: here, the development of sound technology takes centre stage.
The “Os Guarz” ice house is another form of cultural heritage. It is one example of the traditional ice infrastructure in Aragón protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Monument category. The ice house broadens the picture of Labuerda to include technical structures and their significance as part of the region’s cultural heritage.
Churches, Art and Architectural History
The Iglesia de San Sebastián de Labuerda was originally a Renaissance building and is documented in 1570. It was extended in the Baroque style in 1776. Its monumental three-tiered tower defines the building, with Peña Montañesa rising in the background. The Iglesia de San Vicente Mártir reflects a different period: it has a Gothic altarpiece from the late 15th century, attributed to the workshop of Juan de la AbadĂa.
You can also encounter sacred art at the Centro de Arte Sacro de San Vicente de Labuerda. The restored abbey, renovated in 2018, houses a small collection. Labuerda thus offers different ways to experience art: an altarpiece in a church and a collection of sacred works in an abbey.
Casa Buil combines a private prayer room dedicated to the Assumption with a distinctive defensive tower. The building complex dates from the late 15th or early 16th century. The tower was probably built towards the end of the 15th century to protect against French invasions. The date of the complex and the possible construction period of the tower should not be taken to mean the same thing.
The Route to the Ermita de San Visorio
A well-marked path leads from the Iglesia de San Vicente de Labuerda to the Ermita de San Visorio, on a steeply wooded slope. The Ermita is a small rectangular masonry building, probably dating from the second half of the 18th century. Inside are wall paintings from the late 19th century. It stands beside a rock overhang and a spring. According to tradition, San Visorio lived here with his companions Clemente and Firminiano and suffered martyrdom at this spot. The combination of the route, the building and its traditional story gives the outing a different character from exploring the artworks in the town.
